Most people don’t know this song penned by the legendary duo of Rodgers and Hammerstein who wrote “Getting To Know You” for the broadway musical “The King And I.”
Replace the stage with a basketball court and make the title “The Flyers and Fry.”
Ed Fry took over the St. Joseph Flyers last season and he said it was a learning experience for both the players and himself
“I was asking a couple of the seniors how nice it is to come in now and know what’s going on now,” said Fry. “I feel the same way about them. I learned their strengths, weaknesses, personalities and they had to adjust to me.”
Fry will use his new knowledge to help the team. Improve on last season’s 10-14 record against a difficult schedule.
The Flyers return three seniors who were starters last season: 6-foot Landon Rowe, 6-2 Wesley Neal and 6-foot Aiden Deboard.
Three other players who played extensively or started were 6-4 junior Carter Johnson, 6-3 senior Kai Clark and 6-foot Eli Whaley.
“Right away, we’ve got a really good mixture of speed, quickness and size. I’m not talking about 6-6 or 6-8, but we’re 6-4, 6-3.,” said Fry.
“Athleticism is an asset but we’re still developing our skills. Most of our guys play three sports, even four, so we don’t have a lot of time to devote to developing any skills. But we’ve got the raw material.”
Also expected to see playing time are 5-11 junior Carson Williams, 6-foot Zane “Z-Man” Dressel, 5-9 sophomore Mason Weber and 5-11 freshman Beckham Waginger.
“It’s good to have those older guys back. We have some guys who played jayvee last year that are coming up and going to play significantly,” said Fry. “Beckham Waginger is a great addition. You’ll see him out there a lot.
Having a veteran team and players who know the system will allow the Flyers to play a different style.
“We want to play fast. I’ve never met a kid who said they didn’t. We want to run and press, but then you get them out in practice and show them what you’ve got to do to run and gun and they change their minds,” said Fry.
“But with these guys, they like to play fast. We try to score points off our defense. We’re going to try to pressure people more than we did last year.”
Defense will be a key for the Flyers and Fry said he plans to use a variety of defenses.
“We’ve worked a lot on diversifying our defense. We played a 1-3-1 almost exclusively. We’re working very hard on our man and we’re going to throw a lot of other things in there, too, and try to keep teams off-balance.”
In the Southern Ohio Conference, Fry said he doesn’t know what to expect.
“Honestly it’s hard to tell. Some of the teams got transfers in. I suspect Notre Dame is the odds-on favorite. Green will be good,” said Fry.
