6-Run Rally In 2nd Lifts Hornets Past Flyers

COAL GROVE — When there are 14 walks and 21 stolen bases, there’s going to be plenty of runs.

That was the case on Monday as the Coal Grove Hornets outscored the St. Joseph Flyers 12-9.

The Flyers (1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Landon Rowe walked, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a hit by Carson Lyons.

But the Hornets (1-1) scored 6 runs in the second and 3 in the third to lead 9-1.

Four walks, an error, a balk, a 2-run double by Braden Schug and an RBI single by Brisen Collins generated the 6-run inning.

Rylan Smith singled, Cane Webb walked, Schug was hit by a pitch and Blake Collins singled for the 3 runs in the third.

St. Joseph got a run back in the fourth when Wesley Neal was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on a balk and scored on a ground out by Lyons.

The Flyers cut the deficit to 9-6 in the top of the fifth.

Blake Medinger walked, Rowe singled and Lyons had a 2-run single. Evan Aldridge and Carson Willis walked and Beckham Waginger had a 2-run single.

But the Hornets answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning.

Kaden Murphy walked, Blake Collins singled and Brisen Collins doubled. Leland McKnight then singled home the final run.

The Flyers didn’t quit as they scored 3 times in the top of the sixth.

Medinger and Rowe walked and Lyons reached on an error for a run. Rowe scored on a wild pitch and Lyons came home on a double by Neal.

Blake Collins was 2-4 with 2 runs batted in and a double with Brisen Collins 2-4 with a double to pace the Hornets.

Lyons was 2-4 with 3 RBI to pace the Flyers.
