8 Viking batters get hits in rout of Western

LATHAM — Eight different Symmes Valley batters recorded a hit and Will Jones pitched a three-hitter as the Vikings routed the Western Indians to the tune of a 13-2 win on Tuesday night in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

Two Vikings recorded a pair of hits, with Bronx Carpenter going 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in a run, and Asher Maynard went 2-3. Ashton Gothard, Tanner Thompson, Andy Strow, Braden Hankins, Jackson Fields, Gradee Holland and Jones all picked up a hit in the win.

Symmes Valley not only took advantage at the plate, but they also capitalized on 7 errors by the Indians.

The Vikings (9-3, 4-2 SOC) scored first on a wild pitch in the opening inning and held a 1-0 lead into the third and opened up the scoring.

Both Carpenter and Thompson were able to score on a dropped third strike and throwing error, which also allowed Jones to reach third. Then Strow grounded out but was able to drive in Jones. Then Corn scored on an error to give the Vikings a 5-0 lead.

The Vikings added one more run in the fifth but Western got two of those runs back in the bottom of the frame.

The Indians got back-to-back base hits from Alex Pritchard and Christian Hawk. Then Noah Steele doubled into right to score both runners and to cut the Vikings lead to 6-2.

But in the sixth, the Vikings registered 5 hits and rolled off 7 runs in the inning to take a 13-2 lead.

The scoring was highlighted by RBI singles by Jones and Carpenter to bookend the top half of the inning. Holland, Gothard, and Strow had the other 3 hits in the inning.

Jones took the win for Symmes Valley, pitching a complete game. The senior allowed three hits, two earned runs, a walk and struck out two. Jones was also able to retire Western batters in order in four different innings.
