IRONTON — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets needed a team effort and that’s what they got.

The Lady Hornets used a team effort to beat the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers 49-43 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We had balanced scoring with three players in double figures and one with seven,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Nick Miller.

“We played well all night except for a two-minute stretch in the second quarter. That was a good win against a veteran team.”

Jenna Anson scored 15 points, Emma Lively 13 and Izzy Kitts 11 to pace the balanced Coal Grove offense.

Lola Hankins had a game-high 29 points to lead Ironton (4-6, 2-4).

“Hankins played a great game for them. She was tough to stop,” said Miller.

Kitts hit a 3-pointer and scored 7 points and Lively had a 3-pointer as the Lady Hornets took a 12-11 lead.

Hankins hit a triple and scored 7 of Ironton’s points.

The Lady Fighting Tigers took a 22-21 halftime lead as Hankins scored 6 points, Peyton Deer nailed a trifecta and Kaydence O’Neal added a basket.

Anson scored 4 points and Lively hit another 3-pointer for Coal Grove (5-5, 2-4).

The third quarter proved decisive as Coal Grove outscored Ironton 16-11 to take a 37-33 lead.

Anson scored 6 points including 4-of-6 at the line and Kendall Taylor knocked double a triple and scored 5 points.

Hankins scored 9 of Ironton’s points in the quarter with Lexi McCall getting the other basket.

“Our free throw percentage was one of our better ones of the season, especially for Jenna who was 7-of-11,” said Miller.

Lively got 7 points including a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter as Coal Grove added to its lead.

Hankins hit a 3-pointer and scored 7 points and Emerson White added 3 points for Ironton’s total.

On Tuesday, Coal Grove will host Rock Hill and Ironton visits Hurricane, W.Va.
