Blue Jackets sign free agent Monahan

COLUMBUS — The Columbus Blue Jackets made some noise on Monday in the free agent market, signing Sean Monahan to a five-year, $27.5 million contract.

Monahan will average around $5.5 million a year after making just $2 million last season with his previous team, the Winnipeg Jets.

"Sean Monahan is a very talented player, and his addition strengthens our team down the middle and injects valuable experience, leadership and versatility to our lineup," said Columbus general manager Don Waddell. "He can score and create goals, is very good in the faceoff circle and can play on the power play and kill penalties. We're very excited to have him join the Blue Jackets."

Monahan entered this past season as an unrestricted free agent with Montreal and was dealt in February to Winnipeg in exchange for a first-round pick in this year's NHL draft and a conditional third-round pick in 2027.

Monahan, 29, excelled under coach Rick Bowness and his high-flying offense, scoring 13 goals and 24 points in just 34 games. Monahan played on a variety of lines for Bowness and was effective around the net.
