SAN DIEGO — A late rally by Ohio would fall just short as the Bobcats fell to the San Diego State Aztecs 20-13 at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday.
Sam Wiglusz led receivers with 10 receptions on 103 yards while junior Miles Cross scored the Bobcats' only touchdown of the day.
Defensively, linebacker Bryce Houston finished with 13 tackles, including seven solo stops.
San Diego State struck first, marching down field with a 10-play, 44-yard drive that was finished with a 49-yard field goal.
Ohio responded on their ensuing drive with a 19-yard field goal by freshman kicker Gianni Spetic to tie the game 4:22 left in the first quarter.
The Bobcats would grab the lead with 4:44 remaining in the first half when Spetic kicked a 40-yard field goal, giving Ohio a 6-3 lead.
But a 13-yard touchdown toss by Jalen Mayden to Mark Redman on the final play of the half gave the Aztecs a 10-6 halftime lead.
San Diego State extend their lead on a 21-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter and then another touchdown pass by Mayden, to make the score 20-6 woth 5:39 remaining.
The Bobcats would find the end zone with 1:59 remaining, when Cross caught a three-yard pass from CJ Harris for the Bobcats' first touchdown of the 2023 season, cutting the Aztecs' lead to seven points.
Unable to score again, Ohio fell, 20-13.
Up next, the Bobcats return to Athens for their home opener against LIU on Saturday, Sept. 2. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at Frank Solich Field at Peden Stadium and can be watched on ESPN+.
