Bowl Round-up: Cards beat Bearcats; Gore Jr. sets rushing record

Fenway Bowl

Louisville 24, Cincinnati 7

Louisville's Maurice Turner and Jawhar Jordan both ran for over 100 yards each as the Cardinals bulldozed the Cincinnati Bearcats 24-7 to win the Fenway Bowl.

Turner finished the day with 160 yards, while Jordan had 115 to lead a Louisville offensive attack that outrushed the Bearcats by a whopping 287-55 and 419 yards to 138 in total yards.

Cincinnati (9-4) got their lone score of the game when receiver Wyatt Fischer hauled in a pass from Prater and scampered 20 yards into the end zone to tie the game at 7 with 10:58 in the second quarter.

The Cardinals took control of the game in the late stages of the first half, as they manufactured a 10-play, 66-yard drive that resulted in a eight-yard scoring pass to Marshon Ford from Brock Domann to give Louisville a 14-7 lead.

Then Jordan broke loose on a 41-yard run, juking his way by a couple Bearcat defenders to get into the end zone with 0:41 left in the half. James Turner added the extra point to give the Cardinals a 21-7 lead at the break.

Defensively, Louisville (8-5) harassed quarterback Evan Prater all game, sacking him seven times and held him to just 83 yards passing.

The Bearcats did not complete a single pass in the second half as Louisville's lead was never threatened in the final 30 minutes of the game.

The game also marked the renewal of the Battle for Keg of Nails, the traveling trophy that used to be played for on a regular basis between the two squads until the realignment mess. The Cardinals will get to keep the keg for another year, as they have held onto the trophy since 2011.

First Quarter UL—Jawhar Jordan 49 run (James Turner kick), 0:21. Second Quarter CIN—Wyatt Fischer 20 pass from Evan Prater (Christian Lowery kick), 10:58. Las Vegas Bowl Oregon State 30, Florida 3

Deshaun Fenwick stepped in to replace the injured Damien Martinez with a solid rushing performance and a smothering Beaver defense gave up 39 rushing yards to help lead No. 17 Oregon State to a lopsided 30-3 victory over the Florida Gators in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Fenwick lead all rushers with 107 yards on 21 carries as he replaced Martinez — the PAC-12 Conference's offensive freshman of the year — who left the game with an apparent shoulder injury on the Beavers' second drive of the game.

Oregon State (10-3) held just a 10-0 lead at halftime, but blew the game wide open in the third quarter in a span of less than two minutes. Ben Gulbranson hit Silas Bolden for a 15-yard touchdown pass on their opening drive of the second half. Then the defense followed with a blocked punt to set up a 7-yard rushing score by Gulbranson to give the Beavers a 24-0 lead with 8:44 remaining in the third.

A 40-yard field goal from Adam Mihalek with 37 seconds left in the game ensured the Gators (6-7) avoided being shut out, something that hasn't happened since1988.

Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl

Fresno State 29, Washington State 6

Behind a career-high 205 rushing yards and two scores from Fresno State running back Jordan Mims and two touchdown passes from teammate Jake Haener, the Bulldogs rolled past Washington State to a 29-6 in the LA Bowl.

The win capped off an incredible season for the Bulldogs (10-4) who began the season 1-4, but would win eight straight games en route to a Mountain West Conference championship.

Mims earned offensive MVP in the game, as he outgained Washington State's offense — who had 182 total yards — with his 232 all-purpose yards. Each of Mims' scores came via direct snaps out of the Wildcat formation.

His first score came early in the second quarter, when the senior went around the left side for the four-yard score to give the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead. His final score came on a two-yard plunge with 8:29 left in the game to make it 29-6.

Haener finished the game 24 of 36 passes for 284 yards.

Lending Tree Bowl

Southern Miss 38, Rice 24

Frank Gore Jr. ran for an NCAA bowl-record 329 yards, two rushing scores, and a touchdown pass as Southern Miss defeated Rice 38-24 in the LendingTree Bowl.

Gore, the son of the former 49ers running back, recorded scoring runs of 64- and 55-yards. His touchdown pass came in the third quarter with he hit Tiaquelin Mims for the 18-yard score to tie the game up at 24.

Starting in just his second game, Rice quarterback AJ Padgett threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns. All three of Padgett's touchdowns came in the third quarter. His final score, a 18-yard score to Bradley Rozner, gave the Owls (5-8) a 24-17 lead.

The Golden Eagles (7-6) took the lead for good on the second play of the fourth quarter, as Trey Lowe threw a 26-yard touchdown strike to Jason Brownlee to put Southern Miss up 31-24. The scoring play was set up by a 59-yard run by Gore on the first play of a drive that started at the Golden Eagle 2.

New Mexico Bowl

BYU 24, SMU 23

The BYU Cougars staved off a furious comeback attempt by stopping a two-point conversion try by SMU to win the New Mexico Bowl 24-23.

The Mustangs (7-6) got the ball back with 3:01 remaining in the game and drove 88 yards. The 14th and final play would find the end zone as Tanner Mordecai would find a leaping Jordan Kerley for a 12-yard score with 0:08 remaining in the game.

SMU opted to go for the win but Mordecai would be stopped two yards shy of the goal line, on a quarterback draw, to seal the win for the Cougars (8-5).

BYU's defense made multiple big plays in the second half, as the Cougars got a 76-yard interception returned for a score by Ben Bywater midway through the third quarter. Then stopped SMU on downs, after the Mustangs drove all the way to the BYU 24 on their next to last possession.

Frisco Bowl

Boise State 35, North Texas 32

Boise State quarterback Taylen Green accounted for 256 yards and three touchdowns to help the Broncos beat the North Texas Mean Green 35-32 in the Frisco Bowl.

The Broncos trailed 10-6 at halftime, but outscored North Texas 29-22 in the second half to win their first bowl game since 2017.

Boise State (10-4) got a big game from freshman running back Ashton Jeanty, who ran for 178 yards as the Broncos rushed for a season-high 320 yards in the game.

Austin Aune, the 29-year-old quarterback for North Texas (7-7), finished the game completing 17 of 32 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown. However, the junior threw a costly interception on the second play of the fourth quarter.

The mistake ultimately led to Jeanty's one-yard rushing score to give Boise State a 35-24 cushion with 12:05 remaining in the game.
