Broncos reach deal with Saints to trade for Sean Payton

DENVER — After a one-year hiatus, Sean Peyton will be returning returning to the NFL sidelines.

The New Orleans Saints reached an agreement on Tuesday to trade head coach Sean Payton to the Denver Broncos, per multiple outlets.

In the deal, the Saints will reportedly receive a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick from Denver as compensation for the 59-year-old Payton and a 2024 third-round pick.

The Broncos job became vacant in December when the franchise fired first-year coach Nathaniel Hackett after just 15 games.

Payton, who spent his entire head coaching career with the Saints (2006-11, 2013-21), owns a 152-89 record in the regular season and 9-8 in the playoffs during his 15 seasons with New Orleans.

He led the Saints to a win in Super Bowl XLIV and won seven NFC South titles.

Payton's .631 winning percentage ranks seventh all-time among NFL coaches with at least 150 wins and was named the AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2006.

He spent this past season as a FOX NFL analyst.
