Bruins Blank Blue Jackets, 4-0

COLUMBUS — A three-goal second period propelled the NHL-leading Boston Bruins to a 4-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday at Nationwide Arena.


Bruin net minder Linus Ullmark made 30 saves for his fifth career shutout to help the Bruins win their fifth straight games. Charlie Coyle scored a short-handed goal, Matt Grzelcyk, Jake DeBrusk and David Pastrnak also tallied a score to help Boston improve to 7-1-0.


Elvis Merzlikins managed to stop 25 shots for Columbus before being replaced by Daniil Tarasov in the third period, who stopped six.


Columbus has now lost three straight at home and six of its first nine games of the season.


The Bruins struck at 8:43 of the opening period when Grzelcyk rifled his first goal of the season from the top of the left circle over Merzlikins’ glove.


Columbus continued their power play woes, going 0 for 3 on the night and set a franchise record, in the second period, with its 22nd power-play without a goal.


The team is now 0-for-23 in man-advantages this season.


Coyle added insult to injury by notching a short-handed score at 4:30, the Blue Jackets have given up two this season.


DeBrusk extended the Bruins lead to 3-0 after blocking a Kent Johnson shot that led to a breakaway score at 15:07, and Pastrnak added a late goal with 26 seconds left in the second period off a wrister from the left circle.


Columbus will be on the road to face the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.
