Buckeyes escape with 17-14 win over Irish

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Chip Trayanum plunged across the goal line from a yard out with 1 second left to give No. 6 Ohio State a thrilling 17-14 win over No. 9 Notre Dame on Saturday night.

Trayanum's score capped a gutty game-winning drive by Kyle McCord and the Buckeyes that included a fourth-down conversion and a third-and-19 completion to get Ohio State to the Notre Dame 1 with time for two plays.

After an incomplete pass on first down, the Buckeyes went to a running play with 3 seconds left and took advantage of an overloaded defense to one side and what appeared to be only 10 defenders on the field for the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame has now lost five straight to the Buckeye. The last time the Irish won was in South Bend in 1936.

The Buckeyes appeared to have taken control of the game when they stopped Sam Hartman on fourth-and-1, and on the next play, Marvin Harrison Jr.’s block sprung TreVeyon Henderson for a 61-yard dash down the sideline to make it 10-0 early in the third quarter.

The Irish rallied to finally get on the board, as running back Gi'Bran Payne took a direct snap and scored on a 1-yard run to cut the deficit to 10-7 as the game headed into the fourth quarter.

Notre Dame would take its first lead of the game as Hartman marched the offense 96-yards, capping the drive off with a two-yard pass to Rico Flores Jr. with 8:22 left.

The Buckeyes would drive all the way down to the Notre Dame 11. But a defense would snuff out a fourth down run attempt and give the ball back to the Irish and a chance to run the clock out.

After a 12-yard pass by Hartman to Flores Jr. on first down and an 11-yard run by Audric Estime to get Notre Dame out to the 34, it appeared the Irish had a chance to seal the win.

But then Hartman took a loss on a first down run, and then — by what many consider a very questionable play call nearly threw an interception on a halfback screen on second down. Payne would run the ball for a short gain on third down and Notre Dame was forced to punt, setting up the final drive for McCord and the Buckeyes.

McCord competed 21 for 37 for 240 yards. Henderson lead all Buckeye rushers with 14 carries for 104 yards.

Hartman finished the night 17 for 25 for 175 yards. Ohio State will host Maryland in Big Ten play next Saturday and Notre Dame travels to face No. 18 Duke.
