Buckeyes rout Western Kentucky, 63-10

COLUMBUS — Kyle McCord had three touchdown passes and threw for 318 yards as No. 6 Ohio State exploded for 35 points in the second quarter en route to a 63-10 win over the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Ohio Stadium on Saturday.

TreVeyon Henderson scored on touchdowns of 21 and 10 yards put the Buckeyes ahead 14-3 nearly five minutes into the second quarter against the Hilltoppers (2-1)

The Hilltoppers cut into the Buckeyes lead after a 2-yard touchdown pass by Austin Reed to Malachi Corley, making the score 14-10 with 8:10 remaining before halftime.

But from that point on, the onslaught would begin, starting with McCord’s 75-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Harrison Jr. on the first play of their ensuing drive.

Chip Trayanum would explode for a 40-yard score on the first play of the Buckeyes next series to make it 28-10 with 4:13 left in the half.

McCord and Emeka Egbuka hooked up for the finals two touchdowns of the first half and the Buckeyes took a 42-10 lead into halftime.

The last time Ohio State scored five touchdowns in a quarter was on Sept. 21, 2013, against Florida A&M.

The Buckeyes’ secondary got their first test of the season going against Reed, the FBS active career leader in passing yards per game (333.4) and total yards per game (350.0). Reed, who threw for 589 yards and six touchdowns in his first two games, was 21 for 37 for 207 yards with the touchdown and an interception before being pulled in the fourth quarter.

Henderson finished with 88 yards on the ground to lead the Buckeyes ground attack. Harrison, who finished the game with 126 yards receiving, had four of his five catches and 118 yards in the first half. Tight end Cade Stover also caught five balls for 90 yards.

The Buckeyes travel next week to face No. 9 Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday night.
