Bullpen picks up slack after Montas leaves game as Reds sweep Angels

CINCINNATI — An injury forced Frankie Montras to leave the game in the first inning, but the Cincinnati bullpen was there to make the save and the Reds swept the series from the Los Angeles Angels with a 3-0 win on Sunday.

Montas was injured when he was hit by a line drive by Taylor Ward. The Reds starter left the game with a bruised forearm after tossing just 16 pitches. Montas was still able to track the ball down and throw Ward out at first, but left shortly afterwards with the team trainer.

Brent Suter came in and allowed just four hits in 3 1/3 innings of work. Emilio Pagan (2-1) got the win after giving up just one hit in two innings of relief.

“It's not the first time I've come into game in the first inning. It probably won't be my last. It's part of my job,” Suter said.

In total, five Reds relievers combined to pitch 8 1/3 innings and allow just six hits — all of them being singles. The defense helped as well, as the infield turned in two double plays, which also included a stellar stop by Jeimer Candelario at third base.

Angles pitcher Jose Soriano (0-3) went six innings, giving up just three hits and striking out seven. He did not allow a hit until the sixth inning, which was when the Reds did their damage.

With one out, Elly De La Cruz singled. Then Nick Martini reached on a error by Luis Rengifo. Christian Encarnacion-Strand doubled, and Candelario hit a triple to put the Reds up 3-0.

Alexis Diaz earned his fourth straight save in five tries.

Cincinnati face Philadelphia at home on Monday, as RHP Hunter Greene (0-1, 4.35) is scheduled to face Phillies LHP Ranger Suarez (3-0, 1.73).
