The third week of college football has just wrapped up and we have some reflections about what just happened over the weekend.
The Sun Belt had themselves a hangover this week
Last week, it's was all about the "Fun Belt" with Marshall defeating Notre Dame, Georgia Southern over Nebraska and Appalachian State upending Texas A&M.
This week, not so much.
Marshall lost at Bowling Green in overtime. A Bowling Green team that lost the prior week to Eastern Kentucky in 7 overtimes at home.
Georgia Southern lost to UAB. Now to be fair, the Blazers aren't no slouch, but it's a disappointing loss.
And lastly, the Mountaineers needed a Hail Mary play to defeat Troy at home, 32-28.
Basketball? We're a football school now, folks
For the first time ever in college football history, the four most well-known basketball schools Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, and North Carolina are all 3-0.
And also to add to that, Indiana, Syracuse, and UCLA are also undefeated at 3-0.
It's one of those odd occurrences that I'm sure most of us are surprised it didn't happen before, but also at the same time not shocked that it just now happened as well.
Mike Leach is a coaching treasure
Doesn't matter if you like him or not, Mike Leach is one of the most interesting characters left in the college football coaching world.
On the first offensive drive of the game at LSU, Leach's Bulldogs were faced with a 4th-and-one on their own 22. That's when Leach, who does call their plays on offense, decided to go for it.
Yes, they went for it on 4th-and-one from their own 22. And the picked up the first down.
As a result, the Bulldogs drove the length of the field and scored to take a 6-0 lead early.
While LSU went on the win, it was something to behold seeing.
Leach has always been know for the unusual and this sure added to his image.
It's Alabama and Georgia and then the rest in the SEC
This week kind of began to give us a clearer picture of the teams contending for the SEC title and it's nearly becoming a two horse race.
The Georgia Bulldogs have a couple games ahead that could provide them a challenge such as Tennessee or Florida, but they get the Volunteers at home and the Gators are on a neutral field which helps their cause.
So it appears Bulldogs biggest test remaining will be in Lexington when they face Kentucky on November 5th.
As for Alabama, it's fairly evident the SEC west isn't what it was being made out to be. Which greatly benefits them as they're trying to get rolling along.
Arkansas is improved but struggled with Missouri State at home last week.
Texas A&M appears to still have a ways to go before challenging for the west title after watching their first three games.
Ole Miss, while 3-0, doesn't really get tested until they play Kentucky at home the first Saturday in October and the jury is still out on them.
While they have to go to a tough place to play in Baton Rouge, LSU is questionable at best at competing with the Crimson Tide.
The Crimson Tide struggled against the Texas Longhorns, but found a way to win. So while there may be a chance they stumble at some point, the fact that the teams in the west aren't looking so hot, makes their conference title hopes a lot better as each week passes.
