College Football: What we know after week 8

Tulane is riding the (Green) Wave

Eight weeks into the season, and the Tulane Green Wave are sitting atop the American Athletic Conference standings.

It's a great story in and of itself, as the program has had limited success over the years. Willie Fritz and his staff deserve some praise for the direction the team is heading in.

Their November 25 match up at Cincinnati could be a big moment for the program.

TCU could be muddying the waters for the playoff committee

Sitting at No. 7 in the polls, the TCU Horned Frogs are leading the Big 12 and things are looking promising for them.

Their remaining schedule is made up of the middle of the pack of the conference and the last place team (Texas Tech, Texas, Baylor and Iowa State). While, they cannot take any of those team lightly, the Frogs have a very favorable final stretch of games.

If TCU can win out, it will be interesting to see if they can sneak into the playoff. However, the playoff committee always seems to have plans of their own. So this will be an interesting finish to the season.

Speaking of the football playoff..

There is quite a dilemma going on here when it comes to figuring out the four spots for the playoff.

It's almost a consensus that the Big Ten will get either get Ohio State or Michigan in, and there's even a strong possibility both teams could make it.

Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama are vying for a spot. But even the SEC has a chance two representatives depending on who-beats-who.

Then there's Clemson, where as long as they take care of business, they should steal one of the spots from either a second Big Ten or SEC team.

So that leaves the question surrounding Oregon and USC out of the PAC 12 and TCU and Oklahoma State of the Big 12. They're nearly shut out of contention at this point.

Taking just four teams was always a bad decision from the start. It also never made sense to declare there's a group of "Power 5" conferences and then say we're only taking four teams but one conference could have two teams make it.

It was a flawed system from the start and it's still showing that it is.

But at least they're finally doing the right thing and expanding.
