Cyclones notch 6-2 win over Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Behind a three-goal first period, the Cincinnati Cyclones blew away the Kalamazoo Wings 6-2 on Sunday.

Justin Vaive provided the early spark for a Cyclones team that suffered a disappointing loss on Friday to the Indy Fuel. The captain put back a rebound off a Zack Andrusiak shot for his 16th goal of the season to give Cincinnati a 1-0 lead 3:29 into the game.

Andrusiak (11) and Griffin (13) both added to the lead to give the Cyclones a 3-0 before the end of the first.

Cincinnati held a two-goal advantage on Andrusiak's 11th goal in the last 14 games came as he slipped the puck underneath Kalamazoo goalie Pavel Cajan. Less than two minutes later, Lincoln Griffin went to the front of the goal to catch a pass lobbed toward the net by Kohen Olischefski. Brandon Saigeon put Kalamazoo on the board early in the second by stealing the puck from net minder Beck Warm from behind his net for a wraparound goal on the empty net to cut the lead to 3-1.

Asides from the miscue, Warm played pivotal role the second, turning aside 15 shots in the period.

Olischefski netted a goal 12:18 into the second frame, getting a second bounce in front to lift a puck over a falling Cajan to extend the Cyclones lead to 4-1.

Mark Sinclair filled in at goalie in the third period for the Cyclones, stopping 11 of 12 shots on goal.

Cincinnati added two goals in a span of 41 seconds during the final period. Josh Passolt burned a one-timer by Cajan off a feed from Matt McLeod.

The second goal came from the Cyclones penalty kill.

Phil Lagunov was penalized for high-sticking, giving the Wings their only power play opportunity of the game. Kalamazoo elected to pull their goalie to gain a 6-on-4 advantage.

Jalen Smereck would make them pay as he fired the puck the length of the ice into the empty net, to cap off the scoring

The Cyclones return home to begin a three game homestand against the Newfoundland Growlers on Wednesday night.
