GALLIPOLIS — Instead of the old saying “A stitch in time saves nine,” the Coal Grove Lady Hornets used “A switch in the D gave us a victory.”

Thanks to a suggestion by assistant coach Haley Bartram played a big part in the Lady Hornets 55-42 Ohio Valley Conference win Thursday over the Gallia Academy Blue Angels.

Coal Grove lost by 19 points to Gallia in early December and the game didn’t start well for the Lady Hornets as Blue Angels’ guard Ryen Nunn scored 5 quick points.

“That was a big road win for us,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Nick Miller. “One big reason for the win was the suggestion made by Coach Haley Bartram to switch Kendall (Taylor) to guard Nunn after she scored 5 quick points.

“After the switch, Kendall held her scoreless the remainder of the game. It was a big key to the victory.”

After Nunn scored 5 points, Loulea Walker and Kenya Peck had 4 points each as Gallia took a 15-13 first quarter lead.

Emma Lively hit a 3-pointer as she scored 7 points with Taylor adding 6 points to account for Coal Grove’s total in the quarter.

With the defense taking over, Coal Grove rallied to take a 27-22 halftime lead while Jenna Anson scored 7 points and Taylor hit a 3-pointer.

Peck had 4 more points and Halli Angel hit a 3-pointer for the Blue Angels (5-9, 3-7).

Each team scored 10 points in the third quarter and the lead was 37-32.

Coal Grove began to pull away in the fourth quarter.

Taylor scored 8 points, Lively hit her third 3-pointer and the Lady Hornets converted 9-of-15 from the foul line.

Taylor scored 19 points to lead 3 players in double figures for Coal Grove (6-6, 3-5). Lively and Anson scored 13 points each.

“Kendall had her career high with 19 points. Emma Lively had another good night from the 3-point line, Jenna Anson scored well in the paint and Kasey Vanderhoof, Izzy Kitts and Abbie Deeds played their roles well,” said Miller.

Peck had 13 points and Walker 8 to pace Gallia Academy.
