PROCTORVILLE — The Fairland Dragons had their hands full with the rival Chesapeake Panthers during the first half. To change things up, the Dragons used their hands to open up their Swiss Army Knife.
Fairland’s Jack Hayden — who produces as a runner, thrower and receiver — utilized all his skills to help turn a slim 13-7 halftime lead into a 48-13 Ohio Valley Conference win on Friday.
Hayden ran 10 times for 61 yards and a touchdown, completed 3-of-4 passes for 41 yards and 2 touchdowns, and led the team with 4 catches for 48 yards and a score.
Fairland clinched the OVC title outright with the win and locked up the second spot in the Division 5 Region 19 computer ratings. The Dragons are 9-1 overall and finish the league 6-0.
The Dragons will host Zane Trace (6-4) at 7 p.m. Friday in the first round of the playoffs.
With Hayden leading the way, the Dragons racked up 369 total yards with 270 coming on the ground. Lucas Bompus ran 11 times for 98 yards and 2 touchdowns while Quentin Cremeans carried 12 times for 96 yards.
Chesapeake (5-5, 2-4) finished 13th in Region 24 of Division 6. The Panthers will travel to Portsmouth West for a 7 p.m. first round playoff game.
Fairland scored first on a 5-yard run by Bompus with 4:07 left in the first quarter. The run capped a 66-yard, 10-pay drive and it was 6-0.
The Dragons got to the Panthers 28 only to have Ethan Kerns intercept a pass .
Chesapeake put together a time-consuming 84-yard, 16-play drive that ended on a 2-yard run by Andrew Isaacs with 4:26 left in the half. Logan Diamond kicked the conversion and the Panthers led 7-6.
But the Dragons answered with a 61-yard, 10-pay march that ended when Hayden hit Conner Black with a 14-yard pass. Gabe Polcyn kicked the conversion and it was 13-7 with 1:17 to go in the half.
It didn’t take Fairland long to get on track in the second half. The lead went to 20-7 just 2 players after the kickoff.
Cremeans ran for 36 yards and a facemask penalty on the play pushed the ball to the 22. Bompus scored on the next play and it was 20-7 35 seconds into the quarter.
Chesapeake shanked a punt and Fairland had the ball at the Panthers’ 39. Just 5 plays later, Hayden hit Davin Murray with a screen pass and Murray took it the final 23 yards for the score and a 27-7 lead with 7:02 on the clock.
C.J. Graham picked off a pass and gave the ball back to the Dragons at the 41. But Drew Plantz stepped in front of a screen pass and ran it back 34 yards for the touchdown which cut the deficit to 27-13.
But the Dragons answered with a quick 34-yard, 6-play drive as Hayden scored on a 12-yard keeper and the lead was 34-13 with 2:08 left in the quarter.
A 14-yard pass to Keegan Smith and 15-yard penalty on the play got the ball to the Chesapeake 12. Ethan Wall then hit Hayden with a pair of passes covering 3 and 9 yards with the latter going for the score and a 41-13 lead and 9:30 to play.
A bad snap on a punt gave Fairland the ball at the Panthers’ 24 and Bompus scored on a 5-yard run with 4:37 to go.
Andrew Daniels ran for 84 yards on 15 carries and Plantz had 50 yards on 14 tries as the Panthers rushed for 155 of the 192 total yards.
