Fighting Tigers stumble against Blue Devils

GALLIPOLIS — The Ironton Fighting Tigers have been in a giving mood this season.

But in baseball, that’s not good.

Ironton gave up 4 unearned runs in a 6-0 Ohio Valley Conference loss to the Gallipolis Blue Devils on Tuesday.

Gallipolis (4-4, 1-3) got a run in the first inning when Cole Hines drew a one-out walk, Tyler Young singled and Ian Conley reached on an error as the run scored.

After a scoreless second, the Blue Devils got 4 runs in the third inning.

Hines drew a one-out walk, Conley was hit by a pitch and Matthew Foster singled for a run.

Beckett Camden reached on an error as Young scored. After a strikeout, Nathan Shockey singled for 2 more runs.

Gallipolis got its final run in the fourth inning when Connor Roe and Hines walked and Young doubled. Hines was thrown out at home and the next 2 batters popped out and grounded out against reliever Dawson Philyaw.

Chaydan Kerns started and was the tough-luck loser. Kerns gave up 4 hits in 3 innings, struck out 4 and walked 4 while allowing 5 runs — 4 which were unearned.

Philyaw also worked 3 innings giving up 2 hits, an earned run with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Ironton’s only 2 hits were line drive singles by Connor Kleinman in the fifth and Ian Ginger in the sixth.

The Fighting Tigers (7-5, 4-3) only real threat was in the fifth when Kerns walked and Kleinman singled to start the inning but were left stranded.

Ironton plays South Point on Wednesday and Rock Hill on Friday.
