Flyers Blank Mohawks, Advance To District Semis

IRONTON — The St. Joseph Flyers have relied on their defense all season, so it was nice to turn to their reliable friend once more.

The Flyers posted another shutout as they blanked the Northwest Mohawks 4-0 in the Division 5 district soccer quarterfinals on Thursday.

St. Joseph goalkeeper Beckham Waginger had 8 saves for the shutout as the defense limited the Mohawks to 13 total shots.

Conversely, the Flyers took 40 shots as Northwest goalkeeper Peyton Wolfe had 15 saves.

Jack Whaley led the offense with a hat trick and Landon Rowe had a pair of assists. Mason Weber also had an assist.

St Joseph (15-2-1) got the only goal it needed with 7:42 on the first half clock when Whaley scored off a nice crossing pass from the left side by Rowe.

Carson Lyons was heads-up as he scored an unassisted goal off a point blank deflection with 29:09 left in the game.

Whaley got his second goal with 17:35 to go off a through ball as Weber threaded the needle with the pass off his foot and it was 3-0.

Whaley got his third goal to complete the hat trick as he went racing down the middle of the field to catch up with the pass from Rowe and it was 4-0 with 13:0 to play.

The Flyers had 10 corner kicks and 3 fouls.

Northwest (7-12) had one corner kick and 4 fouls.

St. Joseph will play North Adams at 8 p.m. on Monday in the district semifinals at Zane Trace High School.
