PORTSMOUTH — The St. Joseph Flyers season has been like an elevator ride with the team experiencing its ups and down.
Friday started slow with a few stops before zooming up to the penthouse suite in a 65-37 Southern Ohio Conference win over the Portsmouth Clay Panthers.
Carter Johnson had 5 points, Wesley Neal 4 and Aiden Deborde hit a 3-pointer as the Flyers took a 12-8 first quarter lead.
Four different players scored for Clay (3-16, 2-7).
The Panthers cut the deficit to 24-21 at the half as Quinten Demorest scored 7 points and Isaiah Whitt hit a 3-pointer.
Evan Balestra knocked down a 3-pointer and had 5 points as 4 different Flyers scored in the quarter.
But St. Joseph (8-12, 6-3) hit the up button coming out of the locker room for the second half and outscored Clay 20-4 to build a 44-25 cushion.
Landon Rowe came out firing with a pair of 3-pointers as he scored 9 points, Balestra hit a trey and scored 5 points while Johnson had 4 more points.
Aiden Ball and Whitt had the lone baskets for Clay.
Eli Whaley took over as the elevator operator in the fourth quarter as he scored all 12 of his points by making 4 trifectas. Balestra also hit a triple and scored 7 more points for the Flyers.
Demorest had 5 points including a 3-pointer, Keegan Newman scored 4 points and Whitt made his second 3-pointer for the Panthers.
Balestra led the Flyers with 17 points followed by Whaley with 12, Neal with 10 and both Rowe and Johnson added 9.
Demorest scored 14 for Clay.
