PORTSMOUTH — It was a game that was going to determine the sole leader in the Southern Ohio Conference 1 race.
It didn’t take the whole game.
The Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans — preseason favorites to win the SOC 1 — used a big first quarter to take a lead and went on to beat the St. Joseph Flyers 71-51 on Friday.
Notre Dame is now 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the SOC 1. The Flyers fell to 4-6 and 2-1.
The Titans jumped out to a 16-6lead in the first quarter as Cody Metzler scored 7 points including a 3-pointer and Connie Thomas hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points.
Aiden Deborde hit a 3-pointer and Drew Brown a basket for the Flyers.
Each team scored 17 points in the second quarter and it was 33-23 at the half.
Aaryn Bradford, Metzler and Thomas all had 4 points for the Titans.
Deborde had another triple along with 3-for-3 at the foul line as he scored 8 points while Evan Balestra also hit a 3-pointer and had 7 points for the Flyers.
Notre Dame extended its lead to 51-36 in the third quarter as Landon Barbaris hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 8 points and Metzler had 5 points including a trey.
Brown drained a pair of 3-pointers and Eli Whaley hit a trifecta for the Flyers.
Notre Dame added to its lead in the fourth quarter as Thomas hit another 3-pointer and scored 5 points, Dae Quan Woods got 4 points and Metzler was 4-of-4 at the foul line.
Whaley had 2 more shots from beyond the arc, Deborde hit a trey and Wesley Neal scored all 6 of his points in the fourth quarter.
St. Joseph was led by Deborde with 16 points followed by Balestra with 10 while Whaley had 9 points on three 3-pointers.
Metzler scored 20 for the Titans while Thomas had 17 and Barbaris 13.
