Flyers, Indians battle to tie in key SOC match

IRONTON — The St. Joseph Flyers clinched at least a share of the Southern Ohio Conference 1 soccer championship.

But the Flyers would prefer to be greedy.

St. Joseph and the Lucasville Valley Indians played to a 3-3 tie on Thursday which gave the Flyers at least a share of the league title.

The Flyers are 10-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the SOC. They will host New Boston on Tuesday needing a win or tie on senior night to clinch the SOC title outright.

The Flyers won the first meeting at New Boston 9-0.

St. Joseph beat Lucasville Valley 3-0 in the earlier matchup at Valley. The Indians are now 2-7-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the SOC.

The Indians got on the scoreboard before anyone really got settled in their seats as Chase Davis scored off an assist from Jaekyn Ridout just 14 seconds into the game.

Valley didn’t score again until the Davis-Ridout tandem worked again for a goal at the 19:08 mark and it was 2-0.

But the Flyers cut the deficit to 2-1 with 9:30 left in the half thanks to a stellar entry pass from Brady Medinger to Wesley Neal who scored from inside the box.

The Flyers opened up a 3-2 lead in the second half and appeared to be on the verge of a win.

Carson Lyons drilled a 25-yard bomb just below the crossbar off a pass from Medinger to tie the game at the 36:09 mark of the second half.

St. Joseph took the lead when Medinger used a header to hit the back of the net off a corner kick from Landon Rowe with 10:56 left.

Valley managed to tie the game with just 1:51 to play when Lex Logan scored off an assist from Chase Powell.
