Flyers rally late to tie Warriors

IRONTON Maybe they should call themselves the Fighting Flyers.

The never-say-die spirit of St. Joseph saw the Flyers fall behind 2-0 in the first half and battle back to score twice in the final 10 minutes of the game to tie the Eastern Brown Warriors 2-2 in a non-league soccer game on Thursday.

The Warriors (4-6-4) scored early in the game when Hunter Gould got a goal with an assist from Noah Shuemake at the 36:18 mark.

The lead went to 2-0 when Preston West scored off an assist from Gould with 22:00 on the first half clock.

The Flyers (12-2-1) didn’t score until Landon Rowe made a header off an assist from Jack Whaley.

St. Joseph tied the game when Wesley Neal found the back of the net off an assist from Rowe with 4:42 left in the game.

The Flyers goalkeeper Beckham Waginger had 3 saves while the Warriors’ Maxwell Casteel had 5 saves.

St. Joseph had 10 corner kicks and Eastern Brown had 3. The Warriors had 8 fouls and the Flyers 5.

In a pair of home games next week, the Flyers have a Southern Ohio Conference showdown for first place with Lucasville Valley on Wednesday and Portsmouth Clay on Thursday.
