Flyers take advantage of opportunities in win over Tartans

The St. Joseph Flyers know how to do more with less.


The Flyers parlayed 5 hits with 4 errors and 14 walks to rout the Sciotoville East Tartans 14-4 in a Southern Ohio Conference game on Wednesday.


“They put us on base and we took advantage of our scoring opportunities and made them pay off,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.


The Flyers took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.


Landon Rowe singled, Brady Medinger and Drew Brown walked and Evan Balestra hit a sacrifice fly.


An out later, Wesley Neal reached on an error as 2 runs scored.


St. Joseph (2-0) made it 8-0 in the second inning.


With one out, Darryn Harvey was hit by a pitch, Rowe singled and an error on the play scored Harvey. Medinger singled and moved up on an outfield error as Rowe scored.


Brown walked and Balestra hit his second sacrifice fly. Jake Stephens and Neal both walked and Brown scored on a passed ball.


East scored all its runs in the third inning.


Tycyn Pernell was hit by a pitch, Chris Escamilla singled and Kaiden Huston walked to load the bases. A couple of passed balls scored 2 runs, Dustin Bailey singled in a run and a wild pitch scored the final run.


Stephens was hit by a pitch leading off the fourth, Carson Lyons, Carson Willis and Mason Weber all walked and a balk scored a run.


The Flyers took a 12-4 lead in the fifth.


Brown walked, Balestra was hit by a pitch and Neal walked to load the bases. Lyons singled home a run and the return throw to the infield scored 2 more runs.


St. Joseph (2-0) ended the game with 2 runs in the sixth.


Weber walked and pinch-runner Blake Medinger stole second. Brady Medinger grounded out as Blake Medinger scored. Brown singled and stole second with the run scoring on a throwing error.


Rowe went 2-4, Brady Medinger 1-3 with 2 RBI, Brown 1-1, Lyons 1-2 with 3 RBI and Balestra drove in 2 runs with a pair of sacrifice flies to spark the Flyers’ offense.


Willis, Lyons and Neal combined to limit East to just 3 hits. Willis got the win as he struck out 5 and walked 3 in 2.1 innings. He allowed 4 runs but only 2 were earned.
