Flyers take down Panthers, Bryant notches career win No. 300

The St. Joseph Flyers ran their record to 3-0 on Saturday. Head coach Greg Bryant ran his career win total to 300.


The Flyers blanked the Chesapeake Panthers 10-0 in 5 innings to stay unbeaten in the young season and give Bryant a milestone win.


“It was a complete team effort, We had a lot of kids contribute up and down the lineup and in the field. Pitching-wise we got a strong performance. Easily our best game of the year,” said Bryant who is 300-231 in 23 seasons as the Flyers head coach.


“It’s a thing where you accumulate a lot of numbers through the years. This is my 23rd season and I’ve had a lot of good kids who have given a lot of good effort,” said Bryant.

“It feels good to hit a number like that.”

After a scoreless first inning, the Flyers got to work and scored 2 runs in the second inning.


Jake Stephens and Darryn Harvey walked and Mason Weber singled to score Stephens with pinch-runner Ian Whaley going to third where he scored on a sacrifice fly by Landon Rowe.

St. Joseph (3-0) extended the lead to 4-0 in the third inning.


With one out, Drew Brown and Stephens walked. The runners moved up on a passed ball and Carson Lyons delivered a 2-run single.


The lead went 5-0 in the fourth when Brown was safe on an error that sent him to second base. Brown took third on a wild pitch and scored on a hit by Wesley Neal.


St. Joseph ended the game in the fifth inning with a 5-run rally.


Lyons went to first base on catcher’s interference and Blake Medinger beat out an infield hit. Weber walked and Rowe was hit by a pitch to force home Lyons.


Brady Medinger walked to send home his brother Blake and Evan Balestra delivered a 2-run single and it was 9-0.


Brown then hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield scoring Eli Whaley with the final run.


Brown and Brady Medinger combined on a 4-hitter. Brown went 2 innings giving up one hit with 3 strikeouts and a walk. Medinger got the save as he worked 3 innings and allowed 3 its while striking out 3 and not allowing a walk.


Balestra was 1-3 with 2 RBI, Weber 1-1 with an RBI, Blake Medinger 1-1, Neal 1-3 and Lyons 1-2 with 2 RBI.


Peyton Muncy ws 1-2 with a double for the Panthers. Andrew Daniels and Dylan White were 1-2 and Mason Budd 1-1.
