NEW BOSTON — When the offense struggled, the defense took over.

The St. Joseph Flyers shot just 31.7 percent from the field but the defense shut down the New Boston Tigers in the fourth quarter en route to a 48-44 Southern Ohio Conference win on Friday.

New Boston took a 14-13 first quarter lead as Wyatt McNeil, Lamarcus Parker and Levigh Cooper hit three 3-points.

Wesley Neal scored 6 points, Carter Johnson had 4 points and Landon Rowe drilled a 3-pointer for the Flyers (5-2, 1-0).

St Joseph bounced back in the second quarter and took a 33-24 lead as Neal hit a 3-pointer and scored 9 points and Aiden Deborde also had a 3-pointer as he scored 7 points.

Parker scored 7 points and McNeil hit a 3-pointer for New Boston’s total.

The Tigers rallied to regain the lead in the third quarter as Parker scored 10 points including a 3-pointer and Julian Brady had 6 points.

The Flyers could only manage baskets from Deborde, Neal and Johnson.

However, New Boston was limited to 3 points in the fourth quarter — all by Brady — as the Flyers rallied for the win.

Neal scored 5 points and Johnson sank a pair of free throws.

Neal had a strong all-around game with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 5 steals. Rowe had 3 assists and 2 steals while Johnson had 8 points and 8 rebounds.

Parker scored 22 points for New Boston (0-9, 0-1).

The Flyers will host Sciotoville East on Tuesday in a league game.
