Flyers use late-game heroics again, beat South Gallia

PEDRO — Leave it to the St. Joseph Flyers to make for another exciting finish.

Known for late inning heroics, the Flyers did it again on Wednesday as they snapped a 7-7 tie with a run in the bottom of the seventh to beat the South Gallia Rebels 8-7 on senior night.

South Gallia tried the game with 2 unearned runs in the top of the seventh.

With one out, Tanner Sanders got an infield hit and Ayden Conwell reached on a dropped pop up. A ground out moved the runners up and Jahvin Davis doubled them home to tie the game.

But then came the Flyers late inning heroics.

Landon “Rocky” Rowe was hit by a pitch leading off the inning and stole second. After Brady “Quinn” Medinger lined out to first base, Rowe then jogged home as Evan Balestra ripped a double to left field.

After a scoreless first inning, the Rebels got 4 runs in the second without the aid of a hit.

Noah Cremeens was hit by a pitch, Hayden Kemp and Logan Saber both reached on errors as a run scored. Sanders grounded out, Conwell was safe on an error for a run, and Brycen Stanley reached on the fourth error of the inning as a run scored.

The Flyers (13-3) got 2 runs back in the bottom of the inning.

Darryn “Hitman” Harvey was hit by a pitch, Carson Lyons and Mason Weber walked and Rowe singled home 2 runs.

St. Joseph took the lead with 5 runs in the fourth.

Drew Brown led off with a hit, Jake Stephens, Harvey and Wesley Neal all walked to force in a run. Lyons singled to drive home 2 more runs.

Weber walked and Rowe grounded out as a run scored and Balestra hit a sacrifice fly to cap the rally.

The Rebels (10-11) got a run in the fourth inning when Cremeens reached on an error after walks to Stanley and Garrett Gibson.

The Flyers were their own worst enemy as they committed 8 errors. None of the Rebels’ runs were earned.

Medinger went 3.1 innings for the win as he gave up 3 hits, 2 runs, struck out 2 and walked one. Balestra started and went 3.2 innings and did not allow a hit. However, he struggled with his control as he walked 7.

The St. Joseph seniors — Medinger, Brown, Balestra, Harvey and Stephens — have amassed a 69-24 record to date.

The Flyers will host Symmes Valley at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in the Division 4 sectional tournament.
