Football Notebook: Week 2

Well we've already wrapped up two weeks of Ohio high school football. And all that means is more news and points of interest happened over the weekend. Here's some of the interesting things that happened this past weekend.

The Ohio Valley Conference is now 7-0 against the Southern Ohio Conference II (large school division). The final crossover game of the season will be this Friday between Rock Hill and Oak Hill. For contrast, the OVC went 6-3 in 2023 and 7-3 in 2022.

The odds-on favorites to win Division VI, the Coldwater Cavaliers, cruised to a 31-15 win over Clinton-Massie on Friday night. The Cavaliers jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and controlled the game the rest of the way. Coldwater's defense held the Falcons to just 128 total yards in the win.

Trailing by 13 points in the third quarter, the West Muskingum Tornadoes rallied back to win an overtime stunner against the Licking Valley Panthers 26-20 on Friday. The defense made key stops during the fourth, as well as a fourth-and-goal stop in overtime. On the Tornadoes overtime possession, QB Jake Anton found Tavin Bennett for the game-winning 17-yard touchdown pass.

One of the teams to drop from Division IV to Division, Poland Seminary, went to 2-0 last Friday with a 41-7 win over D-III Howland. The Bulldogs will face some tough tests in the coming weeks when they play Canfield in week 4 and South Range in week 6.
