The weather took an ugly turn on Friday, as thunderstorms forced area schools to finish their Week 3 games on Saturday.
Luckily the storms didn't wash away our chance to learn some more interesting news and notes from this past weekend's games.
Coach Bruce Kalb and the Portsmouth Trojans proved they're a ball control team against Greenup County. The Trojans made a 4th down stop, taking over on offense with 7:49 left in the first quarter on Friday. But just a couple minutes into their drive, lightning forced the teams off the field, and ultimately suspended the game to Saturday. But when they resumed play, the Trojans drove down the field and scored with 29 seconds left in the quarter to take a 7-0 lead. Now, the stat sheet will say the time of possession was 7 minutes and 20 seconds. But if you take the postponement into consideration, the Trojans held onto the ball for just under 17 1/2 hours.
Harvest Prep made the 121-mile drive down U.S. 23 to Putnam Stadium for the first-ever meeting between Warriors and the Ashland Tomcats. Despite jumping out to an early 10-0 lead, Prep was able to keep chipping away at the Tomcats, eventually taking a 12-0 lead into the locker room. The game was delayed late into the night, before the teams finally resumed play. Prep RB DezMond Porter helped lead the offense with 11 carries for 85 yards and 2 touchdowns and QB Collin Boff completed 10 of 13 passes for 126 and 2 touchdown tosses in the win. The Warrior defense racked up 6 sacks in the second half to stifle the Tomcat offense.
In terms of big games around the state of Ohio, there was no bigger game than the defending Division VI state champion Kirtland Hornets taking on the defending Division V state champion Perry Pirates. The game lived up to the hype and even gave fans free football as well. The Pirates made a big defensive stop to force overtime. However in the third overtime, the Hornets scored to make it 21-20 and decided to go for two and the win. Quarterback Jake LaVerde dove for the pylon on the two-point try and gave Kirtland the win.
Another battle of two heavy weight programs took place up north this past weekend. The four-time defending Kentucky Class 4A champion Boyle County Rebels traveled to Lakewood to face the No. 1-ranked team in Division I, the St. Edward Eagles. The Rebels never trailed in their 38-21 win, getting a huge performance from Montavin Quisenberry. The West Virginia recruit scored 4 touchdowns and accounted for 265 yards of Boyle County's 397 yards.
A Slight Change
Looks like there's going to be an opponent swap for the Gridiron Classic this Saturday.
There was a story published by Todd Holcomb in the Atlanta Journal Constitution on Friday, Aug. 10, stating that Benedictine, GA had backed out their commitment to playing in the Classic. The reason given for cancellation by Benedictine's AD was due to the team finding out that their kickoff time had been switched from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m and complicated travel plans.
The Cadets were slated to face Archbishop Moeller in the first game of a double-header. Ironton is slated to play St. Francis, NY in the night cap.
Holcomb's article went on to say that Joe Maimone, who set up the game as the founder of matchmaker Prep Gridiron Logistics, was threatening legal action against the Georgia team for backing out the game.
It appears that Moeller is going to face Mallard Creek, NC, a Division 4A team from just outside of Charlotte. Nothing is official, but an announcement should be coming soon.
