Football Notebook: Week 4

Updated: Sep 18

In what was suppose to be a full slate of big showdowns in the area, many of them turned into lopsided games. But in spite of the outcomes, there's plenty of things to talk about from week four.

Eastern Pike's Eric Manley went 8-for-11 passing for 264 yards and 7 touchdowns in Friday's romp over Fayetteville. The Junior QB accomplished those stats in just one half of football, as he sat the entire second half in the Eagles 70-0 win. His 7 touchdown passes makes him the first to do so in the state of Ohio since 2014.

Harvest Prep dropped a 28-22 decision to the No. 1 ranked team in Division IV, Sandusky Perkins, on Friday. The Pirates jumped out to an early 14-0 lead with a pair of interceptions returned for scores and appeared to be well on their way to avoiding an upset. Despite trailing 21-14 at the half, Harvest Prep out-gained Perkins 273-159 in total yards, including 188 yards on the ground. The Warriors finally took the lead late in the third, when QB Colin Boff scored late in the third to give Harvest Prep a 22-21 lead. But Perkins responded with what proved to be the game-winning score in the waning seconds of the third, as Pirates RB Isaac Bunts took a screen pass from QB Sam Schweinfurth 37 yards to make it 28-22.

There was a real barnburner in Division V, Region 20 this past weekend, as the Versailles Tigers survived a scare from the New Breman. The Cardinals scored with 1:12 left in the game, as QB Gavin Dicke hooked up with his brother, Grant Dicke, for a 61-yard touchdown strike to trail 18-17. New Bremen coach Chris Schmidt decided to roll the dice and go for for two and the win. On the conversion try, Dicke rolled out to his right and even had a man open in the corner of the end zone. However Dicke couldn't drop the pass over a Tiger defender and Versailles survived to go to 4-0.

The stage is being set for a huge game in the Midwest Athletic Conference this coming Friday night. Last week, the Minster Wildcats rolled past Parkway 42-21 and the Coldwater Cavaliers defeated Anna 34-18, setting up a mid-season showdown. The Cavaliers are the odds-on favorite to win Division VI, Region 24. Minster is one of the top teams in Division VII, Region 28.

She's now 13-7 overall and for anyone wondering, she was rewarded with her own steak dinner for going undefeated in her picks in week three.
