Football Notebook: Week 7

Just three weeks remaining in the 2024 regular season and boy-howdy are things getting interesting.

A battle between the top teams in the Ohio Valley Conference came down to the wire and ended with one of the most controversial endings to happen in the area in a long time.

But there were more things that happened around the area and across the state of Ohio, and here's a few things to keep up on from last Friday's games.

The ending of the Fairland-Portsmouth game will be talked about for years and maybe for the wrong reasons. The Dragons trailed 21-20 after scoring on an untimed down. They went for two, but Ethan Wall's shovel pass attempt to Quentin Cremeans was battled away at the line of scrimmage. But because the play was allowed to continue, Will Callicoat attempted to pick up the ball and lateraled it to Wall to extend the play before being tackled at the 11. Because the shovel pass was a forward pass and knocked down, the game should've been ended right there.

However a penalty flag was thrown during the play for a sideline warning against Portsmouth, which allowed for the second attempt.

The officials explanation on the field for the penalty was because players from Portsmouth's bench were on the field of play at the beginning of the play, resulting in the sideline warning penalty. And because it was the second sideline warning penalty on the Trojans, it resulted in a 5-yard penalty being assessed and a replay of the down.

It's safe to say this one will be talked about for a long time.

A famous high school football coach once said, "There's a lot of bad football being played out there and sometimes we're doing it too". Well, that might sum up the Midwest Athletic Conference showdown between the Anna Rockets and Versailles Tigers. Both teams combined for 28 penalties in an ugly game that saw Anna pull out a 13-7 win. Despite having 3 touchdowns wiped off the board by penalties, the Rockets managed to build up a 13-0 lead with a touchdown pass by Alex Shappie to Zach Osbron in the first quarter and a 35-yard fumble scoop-and-score by Osborn in the second. The Tigers scored on their opening possession of the second half with a 31-yard dash by running back Landyn Knapke, but that would be as close as they would come to scoring the rest of the game. The win gives the Rockets a firm hold on the No. 2 seed in Division VI, Region 24, just behind top-seeded Coldwater.

One of the big games across the state last weekend took place in front of a packed crowd at Garaway Stadium. The Indian Valley Braves hung on to defeat the Garaway Pirates 40-35 in a shootout on Friday. The Braves were led by RB Grady Kinsey, who ran for 324 yards and four touchdowns. The Pirates took a slim 21-20 lead into halftime after a 1-yard touchdown dive by QB Brady Geibel. But Indian Valley came out the second half and ran the football, controlled the clock, and scored on three-straight possessions to build up a 40-28 lead. The Pirates cut the deficit to one score on a 6-yard scramble by Brady Geibel with 55 second left. But Indian Valley recovered the onside kick and ran the clock out for the win. The Braves' win also snapped Garaway's 28-game home win streak

An upset happend up north last Friday, as the Edison Chargers upset the No. 1 team in Division 4, the Sandusky Perkins Pirates 15-14. The Chargers sealed the win when Cy Finnen rumbled in from 6-yards out on a fourth-and-2 play with 17 seconds on the clock. Edison currently sits atop Division V, Region 18 as one of three undefeated teams in the region. Liberty Center and Oak Harbor are the other two unbeaten teams.
