TORONTO — Canadian Football League quarterback Nathan Rourke announced on his social media on Sunday that he will be signing with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars for next season.
Rourke would lead the BC Lions to an 8-1 record and his impact was felt early on in his first season as the starter.
In just his second game, Rourke threw for 436 yards and four touchdowns to set the all-time single game passing yards record by a Canadian quarterback. He would break his own record twice more during the year, in Week 9 with 477 yards and Week 10 with a 488-yard performance.
He would suffer a foot injury in Week 11 that would keep him sidelined the rest of the season.
After a record-setting 2022 campaign, Rourke was named the Most Outstanding Canadian, becoming the first quarterback in BC Lions history to earn the achievement.
Rourke finished the 2022 campaign throwing for 3,349 yards and completing 78.7 percent of his 324 passing attempts. He also threw 25 touchdowns while playing in just 10 games.
The Lions’ offense led the league in passing yards per game (300.3) and completion percentage (71.6), while their 13 interceptions would tie for the second lowest total in the CFL. Rourke also completed a league-high 65.3 per cent of his passes of 20 yards or more and finished the season with a quarterback efficiency rating of 158.3.
Rourke started at quarterback for three seasons with the Ohio Bobcats from 2017 to 2019 and compiled 25-14 career record in Athens. He also led the Bobcats to three consecutive bowl wins in each of those three seasons.
