FRESNO, CAL. - Fresno State coach Jeff Tedford announced in a statement on Monday that he would be stepping down from his post.
Tedford, 62, has battled health issues in the past, causing him to step away from coaching after the 2019 season. This was Tedford's second stint in Fresno, and was was about to enter his third season at the helm.
Tim Skipper, who currently serves as Fresno State's linebackers coach and assistant head coach, was named interim head coach for the 2024 season.
In Tedford's statement, there was health concerns following a "recent medical check-up", forcing him to step down. He had just attended the Mountain West Conference's media days last week in Las Vegas and at the time said his health was fine.
"I have a tremendous amount of pride and passion for Fresno State, and I understand the time and energy necessary to lead at a high level," Tedford said in his statement. "The players, coaches and Bulldog supporters deserve the best. Unfortunately, I am not able to sustain the commitment needed to perform at the level needed to guide the program.
"We are extremely fortunate to have continuity with a great coaching staff. I have full confidence that they will continue to guide our terrific student-athletes to reach their full potential on and off the field."
Tedford did not coach the Bulldogs bowl game back in December because of health issues, and Skipper filled in as the interim.
The Bulldogs open their season on Aug. 31 at defending national champion Michigan.
