Gutsy Redmen pull off Overtime Upset

Updated: Nov 7, 2022

MCATHUR - In the movie "Slapshot" player/coach Paul Newman had written on the team's chalkboard: We supply everything but guts!

Well in the case of the Rock Hill Redmen, they had plenty in supply.

Coming off a tough loss last week, the Rock Hill Redmen knew it was going to take a gutsy effort to go on the road and face a favored Vinton County team, who was also in search of their first win as well.

Even though it took overtime, it was worth the ticket price as Rock Hill left Vinton County Stadium with a 21-20 victory on Friday night.

After a scoreless first quarter, Rock Hill would break the tie in the second quarter as junior Levi Jiles slashed his way into the endzone from 4-yards out. The point after by senior placekicker Hazley Matthews gave the Redmen a 7-0 lead with 7:04 left in the first half.

Vinton County would only need 57-seconds to tie the game up with a 66-yard touchdown dash by running back Garrett Brown, who took an inside counter and broke loose for the longest play of the ballgame.

Brown would finish the night as the top rusher for either team. Running for 102 yards on

7 carries.

After a Rock Hill punt, Vinton County threatened to score one more time before halftime as they drove down to the Redmen 5-yard line.

On a third-and 2 play, the Redmen defense was able to make a stop on the play as seniors Kordell French and David Jenkins snuffed out a toss sweep run by Viking running back Gabe Rasche and force a field goal attempt.

The 21-yard kick attempt by Cooper Haybrun would sail wide right and the score remained 7-7 at halftime.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Vikings would be forced to punt the ball back to the Rock Hill.

The Redmen embarked on an old school 15-play drive that melted 9 minutes and 36 seconds off the clock. Senior Brock Friend would negotiate the final yard for his first career score and Matthews kicked the extra point to give the Redmen a 14-7 advantage with :36 left in the game.

During the drive, French had two crucial runs to help keep the drive going. The first was a 4-yard run on fourth and one. Then three plays later, a 10-yard gain on a third and eight.

On the kickoff, Viking senior quarterback Tyler Molihan would field the ball and return it 33-yards to give his team prime field position.

Along with a costly penalty by Rock Hill, Molihan would lead the Vikings down the field to the Rock Hill 1-yard line in just 3 plays.

On the final play of regulation, Molihan would dive into the endzone on a quarterback sneak to make the score 14-13.

Haybrun came in and drove home the extra point try to tie the game and send it into overtime.

In overtime, Vinton County would get the ball first.

The Vikings would only need two plays to score as Molihan would take an option run in from 10-yards out and give his team their first lead of the ballgame.

But a bad snap would prevent a Haybrun extra point try, leaving the score at 20-14.

Rock Hill would get the ball next and drive down to the 7-yard line to set up a 2nd-and-goal. On the play, quarterback Brayden Adams gave a fake to his fullback and looked to throw a pop pass to his tightend Chanz Pankcake, who had gotten behind the defense. However, a Viking defender was able to grab Pancake in the endzone and the ball fell incomplete with no call made.

After an illegal motion penalty and facing a 4th-and-eight at the Viking 8-yard line, Rock Hill would line up one final time with the game on the line.

Adams would take the snap, roll to his right and stop to turn and throw a halfback screen pass back to his left to Kordell French.

French hauled the pass in and followed linemen Daniel Medinger and Logan Short into the endzone for the score.

Hazley Matthews would come out and split the uprights on the extra point try to give the Redmen the victory 21-20.

Rock Hill (1-1) returns to action at home against the Oak Hill Oaks.
