PROCTORVILLE — Jack Hayden went over the century mark in rushing and scored twice to lead the Fairland Dragons to a 36-0 shutout win of the South Pointers in Ohio Valley Conference action on Friday night at a muddy Jim Mayo Memorial Stadium.
The rain and high winds from Hurricane Helene subsided by kickoff, but left a muddy track for the Dragons high-flying passing attack. But that did not seem to slow down Hayden and the rest of the offense.
The Dragons piled up 243 yards on the ground, with 172 of those coming from Hayden himself. Kam Kitts added a touchdown on the ground and receiving in the win.
Fairland took control right from the opening kickoff, driving 60 yards in 9 plays. Hayden took a direct snap at quarterback and followed his blockers on a sweep to the left side, and tightroped down the sidelines 22 yards to cap off the drive for the game's first points. Aiden Miller added the extra point to make it 7-0.
The Pointers (1-5, 0-2 OVC) couldn't get their footing on their opening drive and went 3-and-out.
Brayden Hanshaw was able to get off a good punt in spite of the conditions, making Fairland's Keegan Smoth field the punt at his own 38. Smith made a move to the Dragons sideline and followed a convoy of blockers before being dragged down from behind at the 8
Fairland (6-0, 3-0) extended its lead 2 plays later, as Quentin Cremeans bulldozed his way over the goal line from 4 yards out. Miller booted the point after to make it 14-0 with 5:23 left in the opening quarter.
Kitts would get into the scoring column to early in the second quarter, nosing his way in from 1-yard out to complete a 10-play drive. Hayden ran in the two-point conversion to make it 22-0.
Following a punt that pinned the Dragons deep in their own territory, Hayden would take another sweep, follow a host of blockers around end, and scamper 86-yards through the mud for his second touchdown run of the night. Cremeans would add 2 more points on the conversion run to stretch the lead out further to 30-0 with 4:14 remaining before halftime.
The Dragons would execute a 2-minute drive to end the half, first getting a 25-yard run from Hayden to set the Dragons up at the Pointer 25. Then four plays later, Ethan Wall would complete his only pass of the night to Kitts for a 9-yard touchdown toss and a 36-0 lead at the break.
Hanshaw led the Pointers offensively, accounting for 118 of their 119 total yards. Steeler Waulk had 46 yards receiving and Caesyn Pope had 37.
The win sets up next week's first place showdown against Portsmouth at the Trojan Coliseum. Portsmouth's game against Chesapeake was pushed back to Saturday. South Point will host Chesapeake next week.
