Herd falls to Texas State in Sun Belt tourney

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Taevion Kinsey broke the all-time career scoring mark in the second half, but it would not enough as the Marshall Thundering Herd fell 71-68 to No. 11 seed Texas State on Saturday evening in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Marshall finishes with a 24-8 record on the season and will now have to wait to hear its postseason fate next weekend.

Kinsey came into Saturday's game needing 16 points to break Jon Elmore's record of 2,358 career points and he did just that with 7:25 left in the game when he knocked down a pair free throws.

The senior guard finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists. His current career point total now sits at 2,641.

Marshall took a 66-59 lead on a layup by Andrew Taylor with 5:02 remaining in the game, but that would be the last time the Thundering Herd would score the rest of the way.

Texas State would ride the momentum of a 12-2 run to finish out the game for the win and move into Sunday's SBC semifinal.

Taylor finished with a game-high 19 points for the Herd. Marshall also got 13 points from Obinna Anochili-Killen.

Kinsey and Taylor continue to be the only two players in NCAA Division I basketball averaging 20 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.

They are also the only two teammates in NCAA Division I basketball to average 20 points per game.
