HUNTINGTON – Marshall Football coach Charles Huff announced several additions to his coaching staff on Monday afternoon.
Former analysts Aaron Dobson and Bob Shoop have been elevated to coaching positions while Cody Crill joins new offensive coordinator Seth Doege’s staff as offensive line coach.
“As we enter a new year and new season, I’m excited about the additions to the staff!” Huff said. “We were able to hire some great people who happen to be phenomenal coaches as well. Their collective knowledge and experience will help our organization continue to improve. Thank you to the administration for creating the platform for us to be able to enhance our program.”
Doege, whose hire as offensive coordinator was announced on Dec. 5, adds two new pieces to his offensive staff with Dobson coaching the wide receivers and Crill coming from the University of Incarnate Word to take over as offensive line coach.
Dobson, who served as an offensive analyst for the Herd in 2023, brings instant credibility to the wide receiver position, having starred for Marshall from 2009-12, leading the team in receiving in both the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The Charleston native ranks No. 7 all-time in Marshall receiving history in touchdown receptions with 24 and is No. 10 all-time in receiving yards with 2,398.
Following his playing days with the Herd, Dobson was selected in the 2nd round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots where he spent three of his five NFL seasons. In 24 career games in the NFL, Dobson caught 53 passes for 698 yards and four touchdowns.
Crill joins Marshall’s staff after serving as tight ends coach for the XFL’s D.C. Defenders since Sept. 2022. Prior to that, Crill spent four seasons as offensive coordinator for Incarnate Word from 2018-2021 before serving in the same capacity at Northwestern State for nine months before leaving for the XFL opportunity. Crill also served as head coach at Navarro College from 2015-18.
On the defensive side of the ball, Shoop takes over the safeties after serving as an analyst for the Herd last season.
A decorated four-decade veteran in coaching, Shoop has served as defensive coordinator and/or safeties coach at several Power Five programs, including Mississippi State (2018-19), Tennessee (2016-17), Penn State (2014-15) and Vanderbilt (2011-13).
Prior to coming to Marshall in Fall 2023, Shoop was the defensive backs coach for the 2023 USFL champion Birmingham Stallions. In 2022, Shoop was defensive coordinator and safeties coach at South Florida.
In a subsequent move on the defensive side of the ball, Huff announced that defensive coordinator Jason Semore will also coach the linebackers.
