Herd Hoops fall in finals seconds of season opener

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Marshall University men’s basketball team dropped its season opener on Monday night to the Queens University of Charlotte Royals 83-82 at Curry Arena.


Taevion Kinsey scored 23 points and 10 rebounds to earn his eighth career double-double, along with a career-high six steals. The fifth-year senior went 10-for-21 from the field.


Redshirt senior Andrew Taylor went 8-for-22 from the floor, scoring 20 points and accounted for four assists.


Kamdyn Curfman and Jacob Conner also tallied double-digit points with 15 and 11, respectively.


The Royals (1-0) were lead by Gavin Rains, who collected a double-double scoring 14-points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds.


Trailing 41-36 at halftime, the Herd took a 50-48 lead at the 16:18 mark of the second half on a Kinsey layup. Marshall held the lead for nearly the rest of the final period.


However the Royals would make 10-2 run to end the game, with Kenny Dye capping off a the scoring run with a layup to put the Royals ahead 83-82 with nine seconds to go.


Marshall (0-1) brought the ball up court in the waning seconds. Taylor's layup attempt just missed the mark and Kinsey's put back attempt missed as the final buzzer sounded.


The Herd committed just eight turnovers while forcing 17.


The Herd will be back on the court on Monday, November 14, when it hosts Tennessee Tech at the Cam Henderson Center. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
