HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Marshall Thundering Herd began its final road trip of the season with a tough 92-83 win over the James Madison Dukes on Wednesday night.
The game was nip-and-tuck all night, as neither team lead by more than six points during the first 38 minutes of the contest.
A layup from Terrance Edwards cut Marshall's lead to 85-83 with 1:33 remaining in the game.
But the Herd's defense would hold JMU (20-10, 11-6 Sun Belt) scoreless the rest of the way as Marshall closed out the game with a 7-0 run thanks to some clutch shooting from the foul ine.
The Herd (24-6, 13-4 Sun Belt) knocked down seven of its eight attempts, including Obinna Anochili-Killen who made all four of his attempts.
The defense held JMU 0-for-5 from the field and forced a turnover to close the game out.
Taevion Kinsey scored a game-high 31 points and surpassed Skip Henderson's mark of 2,574 points with a layup five minutes into the contest to become the second-leading scorer in program history. He also dished out a game-high seven assists.
Andrew Taylor scored 19 points, falling one point shy of his fifth straight game of 20 or more points. Anochili-Killen added 12 points and finished tied with Taylor for the team-high in rebounds with nine. Anochili-Killen also rejected three shots.
Edwards led JMU scorers with 26 points and a game-high 11 boards. Takal Molson added 16 and Julian Wooden had 14 for the Monarchs.
The Herd finishes up the regular season in Norfolk, Virginia, on Friday against the Old Dominion Monarchs at 7 p.m.
