Hornets run roughshod over Marauders, 61-34

COAL GROVE — The only person in Coal Grove who did more work than Chase Hall, was the cannon operator.

The Hornets used an offensive explosion in second quarter to propel them to a 61-34 victory over the Meigs Marauders at Lemaster Stadium on Friday night.

Chase Hall lead both teams in rushing, compiling 410 yards on 28 carries and 5 touchdown on the ground. The senior tailback also recorded a 40-yard reception on the final play of the first half, that he nearly scored on.

Only 3 games into the season, Hall is already nearing the 1000-yards on the season.

In the first quarter, Coal Grove took the opening drive and marched 53-yards in just three plays as Kaden Murphy knifed his was into the endzone on a 13-yard run to give the Hornets an early 6-0 lead with 11:06 in the opening period.

Meigs answered with a long 11-play drive that was finished off by a 4-yard run by Conlee Burnem. Walker Mayer came on to boot the extra point and the Marauders took a 7-6 lead with 6:08 left in the first quarter.

The score would mark the last time Meigs lead in the ballgame.

Late in the quarter, Murphy added his second score of the night on a 4th-and-20. On the play, quarterback Wyatt Mannon flipped a fast screen pass to Murphy in front of the Hornet bench, Murphy managed to make a defender miss and race into the endzone to put Coal Grove back up on top 12-7.

The second quarter turned out to be one of the wildest offensive outputs of the season, where both teams combined for 458 total yards and 57 points, and three of the scores occurred within 33-seconds of each other.

Chase Hall highlighted the offensive onslaught as he tallied 180 yards on 8 carries and three touchdowns in the quarter.

Not to be outdone, Meigs quarterback Griffin Cleland would complete 9-of-13 for 156 yards and a touchdown through the air, and rush for a touchdown in the second period.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Hornets finally found the endzone again as Hall plowed his way in from 6-yards out on the first play of the final period. The conversion try failed but the Hornets held a 48-34 advantage with 11:54.

After forcing a Marauder punt, the Coal Grove offense would use a 6-play drive that covered 78-yards. The drive was capped off by Hall again, who scored from 17-yards out to make the score 54-34 with 6:04 remaining in the game.

The Hornet defense would shut out the Meigs offense in the second half, surrendering just 94-yards of offense and three first downs in the entire half.

The Hornets travel to South Point on Friday.
