Ironton golf finishes 9th in D2 state tournament

AKRON — There was no quit in the Ironton Fighting Tigers.


Resting in 10th place after the first round of the Division 2 state golf tournament, Ironton battled through cold weather on Monday and improved its standing by moving up a place in the final day of the tournament at the Akron Firestone Country Club.


Ironton trailed Bay by 2 shots after the first day and jumped into ninth place on the second day final standings. Westfall moved up from 12th to 10th as Bay fell to 11th.


Kettering Archbishop Alter won the tournament by 26 strokes over runner-up Ottawa Hills. Alter had a 598 team score and Ottawa Hills 624.


Ironton had a 2-day total of 681. The Fighting Tigers posted a 346 on Sunday but came in at 335 on the second day for an improvement of 11 shots.


Springfield Northwestern had a 652, Chagrin Falls 654, St. Clairsville 659, Columbus Academy 661, John Glenn 664, Poland Seminary 671, Ironton, Westfall 689, Bay 696 and St. Marys Memorial 710.


Junior Carson Blankenship had a 167 on rounds of 91 and 76 to lead Ironton individually. He tied for 37th overall.


Senior Hunter Freeman went 86 and 83 for a 169 total.


Senior Elijah Ford hit 84 and 87 for a 171, freshman Silas Keyes went 174 on rounds of 85 and 89, and senior Judah Barnes finished with a 181 on rounds of 91 and 90.


Fairland Dragons’ senior Jeremiah Fizer had a 168 title on rounds of 82 and 86.


The tournament medalist was Matthew Kreusch of Alter with a 14- on rounds of 74 and 66. Alter had 4 golfers among the top 12 finishers.


The Fighting Tigers finished as Ohio Valley Conference champions, sectional champions and district runners-up by one shot to Westfall.
