WAYNE, W.Va. — Ironton football isn’t the only one who can run a spread offense.
Ironton utilized the entire court as the Fighting Tigers got a big 74-66 win over the Wayne Pioneers on Saturday afternoon.
Braden Schreck — the Ironton quarterback who ran the spread offense to a state title this past season — was the quarterback of the basketball spread offense with Markel Cotton playing the big play player as they combined for 42 points.
Ashton Layne had 10 points and 11 rebounds while Bryce Markins and Tyler Roach hit some pivotal 3-pointers as Ironton improved to 10-5.
“If you’re going to play us man like that, and we can spread you out with some of the other guys out there to his 3s like Markins and Roach, we’re going to hit those shots,” said Ironton coach Chris Barnes.
“I thought we rebounded well, we defended well. Offensively, that was the game of Markel’s career. Markel played super good and Braden always gets down hill.”
The game was tied at 13-all in the first quarter but Cotton had a putback and Schreck hit a 15-footer with 2 seconds left as Ironton took a 19-15 lead.
Isaac Meddings hit a 3-pointer to start the second quarter and Wayne trailed 21-18.
But Cotton scored 3 points and Schreck had a steal and layup. Peyton Marcum’s 3-pointer had the Pioneers within 26-21 when Cotton hit a 3-pointer and Schreck converted a 3-point play and it was 32-21.
A 12-footer by Colton Heck got Wayne within 32-24 only to have Markins bury a 3-pointer and Schreck made a layup for 39-24 lead.
Wayne (9-3) closed the quarter with 6 straight points to make it 39-30 at the break.
Ironton went on an 8-2 run to begin the second half and went up 47-32. Layne had another putback and Roach nailed a 3-pointer as Ironton built a52-36 lead.
Check made a layup and then fed Carson Freeman for a layup as Ironton went up 56-41.
Meddings sank two foul shots and it was 56-43 to end the quarter.
Layne and Schreck had back-to-back layups to give the Fighting Tigers their biggest lead at 68-50.
Ironton could have salted the game away but was unable to convert free throws. The Fighting Tigers were just 7 of 18 from the line in the fourth quarter.
Markins finally stepped up and made 4 straight free throws to open up a 74-62 and help Ironton withstand any Wayne comeback as Meddings made three 3-pointers over the final 45 seconds.
Meddings had 28 points to lead Wayne including 8 of 8 at the line. He is shooting 97 percent from the foul line this season and has missed just one free throw in 33 attempts.
Ronnie Stanley scored 12 points for Wayne.
