Jackets offense sputters in loss to Carolina

COLUMBUS — The Columbus Blue Jackets fell too far behind in the second period, as their comeback attempt fell short and the Carolina Hurricanes blew out of town with a 4-2 win on Thursday night.

Despite a scoreless first period, Columbus goalie Daniil Tarasov came up with an incredible save to keep the game scoreless. The Blue Jackets netminder attempted to make a pass behind his own net, but the puck skidded over Anrew Peeke's stick and Carolina's Martin Necasfired a shot for a sharp angle that Tarasov turned aside with a sliding save.

But Carolina broke the tie when Teuvo Teravainen got ahold of a loose puck in the slot and slung it past Tarsov legs less than a minute into the second period.

Sebastian Aho got credit for a goal when the puck bounced off a Columbus' skate and pin-balled into the net for a 2-00 lead.

Less than two minutes later, Cole Sillinger got Columbus on the board, thanks to a nice set up by Zach Werenski on a rush, and Sillinger ripped a shot under Spencer Martin's arm to make it 2-1.

Martin stopped 20 shots in the win against his former team. Martin was claimed off waivers from Columbus on Jan 19 and is 4-0-1 since joining Carolina.

Brady Skjei gave the Hurricanes back their two-goal lead, when he poked a one-handed shot past Tarasov just before intermission.

“I mean, there were areas where we probably could have been a little better, but for the most part, we knew when we got pucks behind their defense we would be successful — and that showed,” Skjei said.

Seth Jarvis also tallied for the Hurricanes

Columbus cut the deficit to one goal in the third, as Alexander Nylander netted his first goal with Columbus on a wrister from the middle of the blue line for a power play goal.

But despite the special teams goal, the Blue Jackets struggled offensively in the third, generating only eight shots.

Cole Sillinger put the game away with an empy-netter with just 15 second remaining for the 4-2 win.

Tarasov finished the night with 28 saves for the Blue Jackets, who lost on the road to the New York Rangers 4-1 in the first leg of a back-to-back on Wednesday.

Blue Jackets travel to The Windy City to face Chicago on Saturday night.
