Jayhawks upset Sooners; Georgia cruises in "Cocktail Party"

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Devin Neal scored on a nine-yard run to give Kansas the lead and the defense stopped Oklahoma's last second drive to preserve a 38-33 win over the No. 6 Sooners on Saturday.

Kansas (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) looked as if they had blew their chance to win when Jason Bean was intercepted by Ethan Downs with 2:29 remaining and trailing 33-32.

But the Jayhawks' vastly improved defense forced Oklahoma (7-1, 4-1) to punt.

Bean would take advantage of the second chance, with a 13-yard run on the first play and later on 37-yard pass on a fourth-down play to get the ball all the way down to the Sooner 9.

That set the stage for Neal to scamper in from 9 out to give Kansas the lead back.

But it also gave Oklahoma's offense one last shot with the ball.

Dillion Gabriel completed a 39-yard pass to Brenan Thompson to put Oklahoma on the Kansas 27 with 24 seconds to go and then a short throw to Jovantae Barnes to inch closer to the 23. Then on the final play, Dillon's pass sailed high into the end zone to set off the field-storming celebration.

The fans celebrated their first win over Oklahoma since October 4, 1997, by tearing down the goal posts and then dumping them into Potter Lake.

“I got caught in a whole bunch of students,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “I hope nobody gives me a breathalyzer just off the fumes out there.”

Bean threw for 218 yards with two interceptions and ran for 62 yards and a touchdown. Daniel Hishaw also had two touchdown runs for the Jayhawks.

Gabriel finished the game with 171 yards passing and three touchdown runs. Tawee Walker lead the Sooners rushing attack with 146 yards and a score.

Georgia 43, Florida 20

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Carson Beck threw two touchdown passes in his hometown and Daijun Edwards ran for two scores as the No.1 Georgia Bulldogs dominated the Florida Gators 43-20 on Saturday.

The win extended the Bulldogs streak to 25 and their third-straight in the "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" rivalry.

By halftime, Georgia (8-0, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) almost could have began cracking open the celebratory drinks, scoring on their first four possessions to sport a 26-7 lead at the break.

Florida attempted two trick plays during the first half, both of which were sniffed out by Georgia. One of those plays came on a fourth-and-inches pass at the Florida 34-yard line and proved to be the turning point in the game.

Florida (5-3, 3-2) attempted to fake a quarterback sneak and snapped the ball through Graham Mertz’s legs to running back Trevor Etienne — who tried to make a throw but got tackled for a 3-yard loss.

Three plays later, Edwards scored to make it a 17-7 lead.

Mertz fumbled on the Gators' ensuing possession, and Georgia converted that into another touchdown by Edwards. Georgia later added a safety when it blocked a punt through the end zone.

Beck finished 19 of 28 for 315 yards. He was not sacked and saw little pressure all day. Edwards rushed for 95 yards and now has four TDs in the last two games in the series. Ladd McConkey caught six balls for 135 yards and a score.

Washington 43, Stanford 33

STANFORD, Calif. — Michael Penix Jr. continued make a case of the Heisman, throwing for four touchdown passe, as No. 5 Washington held off a fierce comeback attempt from Stanford to beat the Cardinal 42-33 on Saturday.

The Huskies (8-0, 5-0 Pac-12) got their passing game going after being held without an offensive touchdown last week to earn their 15th-straight win.

The Cardinal (2-6, 1-5) kept pace with Washington throughout the first half, getting two field goals from Joshua Karty in the final 1:05 of the half to trail 21-13 at the break.

The Huskies were stuck in a tight game entering the fourth quarter, clinging to a two-point lead and facing a third-and-8. Penix hit Germie Bernard for a 15-yard pass to convert and then found Devin Culp wide open for a 24-yard score to cushion Washington's lead to 35-26.

Washington would get chances to put the game away, but Rome Oduzne would fumble in the red zone and Penix threw an interception in the end zone after the Cardinal cut the deficit to two points.

But the Huskies' defense would come up with a key stop on a trick play by Stanford. On a fourth-and-two play, receiver Tiger Bachmeier would attempt a pass from the Stanford 28, but the ball would be dropped by an open Jayson Raines with 3:20 to play.

With the short field, Washington would punch one in to put the game away when Dillon Johnson scored on a 13-yard run.

Penix finished the game with 369 yards and connected on two TD passes to Ja'Lynn Polk and another to Odunze. Polk led all receivers with 148 yards receiving.

Ashton Daniels ran for two scores and threw another to Elic Ayomanor but it wasn't enough to prevent Stanford from losing their seventh straight home game.
