COLUMBUS, Ohio — It took Johnny Gaudreau just 40 seconds into overtime to deliver the game winning goal and give the Columbus Blue Jackets a 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday night.
Jack Roslovic netted two goals and two assists, Patrik Laine had a goal and two assists, and Boone Jenner and rookie Kirill Marchenko also scored for Columbus. Gaudreau and Vladislav Gavrikov each registered two assists and goalie Elvis Merzlikins stopped 33 shots.
Anze Kopitar scored twice, and Blake Lizotte, Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Adrian Kemp also had goals for the Kings, who earned a point after rallying from two two-goal deficits. Jonathan Quick finished with 20 saves.
The Blue Jackets held a two-goal advantage out of the first period thanks to Marchenko’s first NHL goal at 6:44. Jenner goal came 17 seconds into a Kings’ penalty.
The Kings stormed back in the second period, as Kopitar cut the deficit in half at 4:42 and Lizotte pulled Los Angeles even at 8:25.
Laine would put the Blue Jackets back in front, using a give-and-go from Roslovic around the midway point of the second period. However, Anderson-Dolan would even the game again five minutes later.
Roslovic would electrify the crowd, scoring twice nearly 90 seconds apart — one short-handed and one on the power play — to give Columbus a 5-3 after two periods. He became the fourth player in Columbus history to record a short-handed and power-play goal in the same game — the last player to do so was Rick Nash in 2009.
The Kings looked to control the third period, outshooting Columbus 16-7. Kopitar cut the lead to one at 4:52 and Kempe tied the game up just 39 seconds later.
In over time, Gaudreau rushed in and tipped a rebound off of Laine’s shot. After a lengthly video review, the goal stood after replay revealed Kings’ Kevin Fiala directed the puck into his own net.
