IRONTON — There’s no truth to the rumor the Coal Grove Hornets are changing the starting time of all home games to 11 a.m., but it would be just fine with Owen Johnson.
With the final game of the Flyer Invitational beginning at the morning hour, Johnson scored 41 points as Coal Grove beat the St. Joseph Flyers 57-48 on Saturday.
Landon Rowe was the Flyers only player in double figures. He scored a season-high 16 points to go with 5 steals.
Johnson scored 12 points in the first quarter as Coal Grove took an 18-9 lead,
Rowe hit a trifecta and scored 5 points for the Flyers.
The lead was 35-27 at the half as Johnson scored 14 points in the second quarter including 6-of-6 free throws.
Rowe and Carter Johnson scored 4 points each and Eli Whaley drained a 3-pointer as the Flyers outscored the Hornets 18-17.
Johnson was still on fire in the third quarter as he scored 11 points thanks to 3-of-3 free throw shooting and the lead grew to 50-32 as the Flyers went cold and scored only 5 points.
In the fourth quarter, the Flyers began to rally as Rowe scored 6 points, Carson Willis made a 3-pointer as he scored 5 points and Whaley had 6 points as the Flyers outscored Coal Grove 16-7 but still fell short.
Johnson scored 4 points and Cameryn Chaffins added a basket.
Wesley Neal had 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Rowe had 5 steals and Whaley 4. Kai Clark had 3 rebounds and Aiden Deborde had 3 assists.
