LAS VEGAS — For the third time in five years, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl Champions.
After trailing for much of the game, Mahomes threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman with 3 seconds left in overtime, completing the Chiefs rally to beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 on Sunday, to win the Lombardi Trophy.
Kansas City became the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champs in 19 years and ninth overall.
Mahomes didn't look his best for much of the first half, including a crucial interception. But with the game on the line, he able to make the needed plays. He finished 34 of 46 for 333 yards and two TDs.
For much of the contest, the game was mostly a sloppy, mistake-filled one. At times, it was even boring until the fourth quarter and overtime.
Things began to pick up in the final quarter of regulation, as the 49ers took the lead on a 10-yard touchdown pass by Brock Purdy to Jauan Jennings, who broke through a tackler on a slant route into the end zone.
Jennings threw a touchdown pass to Christian McCaffery in the second quarter, joining Eagles quarterback Nick Foles as the only players to throw and catch a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl.
However, the extra point would be blocked, leaving the score at 16-13 with 11:22 remaining.
Harrison Butker and Jake Moody exchanged field goals, setting up a final drive by Kansas City to tie the game and force overtime.
Mahomes and Kelce went to work during the final drive of regulation. The two superstars connected for a 22-yard gain to set up Butker’s tying kick, a 29-yarder with 3 seconds left.
San Francisco got the ball to begin overtime — and aided by a holding call on Kansas City’s Trent McDuffie — helped the 49ers drive to the Chiefs 9. But Purdy was forced to throw the ball away on third-and-goal and San Francisco settled for a 27-yard field goal by Moody.
Trailing 22-19, the Chiefs began a methodical drive that looked much like the ones they have made throughout the entire postseason.
During the drive, Mahomes converted a fourth-and-1 with an 8-yard run to keep the Chiefs' chances alive and then scrambled 19 yards to set up the winning score.
After Mahomes connected with a wide-open Hardman, the Chiefs ran on the field as red-and-yellow confetti fell from the rafters.
Purdy finished the game 23 of 38 for 255 yards passing. McCaffery carried the ball 22 times for 80 yards and had 8 catches for 80 yards.
