Keys to the Game: Week 10

South Point Pointers (3-6, 1-5) @ Gallia Academy Blue Devils (7-2, 4-2)

Time: Friday, October 21, 7:00 PM

Where: Memorial Field, Gallipolis, OH

Suffering two straight losses, the Blue Devils need to get back on track as the playoffs begin next Friday. The Pointers still have a chance for postseason play, but will need to win in order to play in week 11.

South Point:

  • The Pointers need to get their ground attack going early and keep the pressure on a Gallia Academy defense that has had trouble stopping the run the past two games.

  • Defensively, the Pointers will need to keep Hudson Shamblin in check. He's going to gain yards, but preventing long gains will be a priority.

Gallia Academy:

  • Getting back to what the Blue Devils do best will help them. A steady diet of Shamblin running the ball and Fellure using his dual abilities is a start.

  • Eliminating unnecessary penalties and mistakes will help the Blue Devils in executing their game plan.

Northwest Mohawks (6-3, 3-1) @ Symmes Valley Vikings (1-7, 0-4)

Time: Friday, October 21, 7:00 PM

Where: Viking Stadium, Willow Wood, OH

As tough as the 2022 season has been, the Vikings can still secure a playoff spot with a win on Friday. The Mohawks are in a must-win situation, after their loss to Eastern last week, as they need to win to earn a share of the SOC I title.

Northwest:

  • The Mohawks will look to stick to their ground game. So expect to see Wyatt Brackman get his name called a lot.

  • Look for the defense to stack the line of scrimmage and prevent the Vikings from opening up holes for their backs.

Symmes Valley:

  • The offense has had trouble scoring this season. So limiting penalties and positive yardage when the Vikings have the ball will be important on Friday.

  • Defensively, the Vikings need to help their offense out. So forcing the Titans to 3-and-outs or forcing turnovers will be needed this week.

Green Bobcats (6-3, 1-3) @ Eastern Eagles (3-6, 3-1)

When: Friday, October 21, 7:00 PM

Where: Eastern High School Eagles Stadium, Beaver, OH

The Bobcats are in the playoffs, but they need momentum and to secure a favorable seed for the first round. The Eagles are still not guaranteed to play next week if they lose, so it's a win-and-you're-in scenario.

Green:

  • The Bobcats have to find traction with their rushing attack. The offensive line will need to set the tone and open holes for the Bobcat running backs.

  • On defense, getting pressure on quarterback Dylan Morton will be needed to ground the Eagle passing attack.

Eastern:

  • The Eagles will look to take advantage of their perimeter attack. So expect to see the the offense air it out.

  • Keeping the Bobcat rushing attack from dictating the tempo of the game will be important.

Chesapeake Panthers (2-7, 0-6) @ Fairland Dragons (6-3, 3-3)

Time: Friday, October 21, 7:00 PM

Where: Jim Mayo Memorial Stadium, Proctorville, OH

Fairland shocked everyone last week as their quarterback roulette game plan worked to near perfection against Coal Grove. The Panthers could sneak into the playoffs with a win, but it will be a tall task. But it's a rivalry game, so anything is possible.

Chesapeake:

  • The Panthers have to get their offense going early. So execution and eliminating penalties will aid them.

  • Defensively, limiting big plays from other Dragon offensive weapons will help them in holding down the score.

Fairland:

  • Steeler Leep was the headliner for the offensive attack last week. So it would't surprise anyone if he doesn't headline the game plan this week.

  • The Dragon defense will need to keep the Panthers from burning clock and force them into long yardage situations on third downs.

Rock Hill Redmen (5-4, 3-3) @ Coal Grove Hornets (5-3, 2-3)

Time: Friday, October 21, 7:00 PM

Where: Lemaster Stadium, Coal Grove, OH

A lot is on the line for this big rivalry game. The winner is projected to finish in the 4th spot of the region and earn possibly two home playoff games. Expect to see an old fashioned smash mouth football game.

Rock Hill:

  • The success of the Redmen will hinge on Kordell French and his big play magic. If he can make big plays, the rest of the Redmen will too.

  • Stopping Hall will be top priority. Limiting his chances of breaking loose and wearing him down will be pivotal.

Coal Grove:

  • The Hornets need to do what they do best and just keep pounding the rock. Expect Hall, Simpson and Murphy's names to be called a lot.

  • Coal Grove's defense must keep the Redmen from getting big chunks of yards on early downs and force passing situations.

Game of the Week: Wheelersburg Pirates (7-2, 4-0) @ Portsmouth West Senators (8-1, 4-0)

Time: Friday, October 21, 7:00 PM

Where: Portsmouth West Stadium, West Portsmouth, OH

Preseason predictions were that this game would be for the SOC II title, and neither team disappointed. The Pirates and the Senators will be another smash mouth game with playoff seeding implications on the line this Friday.

Wheelersburg:

  • The Pirates have heavily relied on a quartet of rushers this year. Expect to hear Derrick Lattimore, Ethan Glover, Creed Warren, and Eli Jones names called a lot.

  • The passing game is one thing that's missing in the Pirate offense. It may be necessary to go through the air to get by the Senator defense.

  • The defense will need to put a lid on running back Ryan Sissel and the West rushing attack. Look for the Pirates to key him everywhere he goes.

Portsmouth West:

  • The Senators offense has leaned on the legs of Ryan Sissel this season. So it shouldn't be a shock to see that continue Friday night.

  • The offense has also shown balance this season as well. So look for quarterback Mitchell Irwin and receiverJeffery Bishop to help attack the Pirate defense.

  • The West defense will need to force the Pirates into passing situations and make them get out of their comfort zone.

Game of the Week: Ironton Fighting Tigers (9-0, 6-0) @ Portsmouth Trojans (6-3, 5-1)

Time: Friday, October 21, 7:00 PM

Where: Trojan Colosseum, Portsmouth, OH

Ironton earned a share of the OVC title last week, but can claim it all for themselves with a win on Friday. The Trojans can claim a share of the league title and even push themselves up the ladder in the region seedings with a win.

Ironton:

  • Establishing the ground game has to be of importance. So expect the ball to be distributed among the large number of Tiger ballcarriers.

  • Corralling Duncan and keeping him for getting out of the pocket will limit the Trojan play calling.

  • It's no secret penalty yardage has been piling up in recent weeks. Cleaning up costly penalties will give the Trojans less of a chance to stay close Friday.

Portsmouth:

  • Tyler Duncan's arm and legs will have to set the pace for the Trojan offense so his teammates can feed off of his success.

  • Portsmouth's defense has the athletes to challenge Ironton's playmakers. So limiting big plays will rest on if they're up to the test.

  • The Trojans cannot afford negative plays or penalties against an opponent like this. So execution will be top priority.
