Keys to the Game: Week 2

Symmes Valley Vikings @ Rock Hill Redmen

Time: Friday, August 25, 7:00 PM

Where: Redmen Stadium, Pedro, OH

It's been 28 years since these two schools have locked horns. It'll be contrasting philosophies, as the Vikings will be looking to attack with a more modern-style offense and Rock Hill will be looking to power the ball with an old school offense.

Symmes Valley:

  • The offense showed some growing pains last Friday. So moving the chains and getting a rhythm will be needed to instill confidence this week.

  • The Vikings will need to contain Rock Hill's backfield. They'll need to be physical and limit big gains on early downs.

Rock Hill:

  • Rock Hill's muscle will be a focal point on Friday, especially in the early going. If they can melt clock and keep the ball early on, things will go well all game.

  • The Redmen will have a speed advantage on the defensive side. Using that advantage to swam to the ball will be a must when the Vikings are on offense.

Minford Falcons @ Chesapeake Panthers

Time: Friday, August 25, 8:00 PM

Where: Panther Stadium, Chesapeake, OH

The Hornets will be searching for a running back to replace Chase Hall and carry the load. As history has shown, Coal Grove has had no trouble finding someone to fill that role. The Musketeers will be looking to kick off the Travis Jones era with a win.

Minford:

  • The offense for Minford struggled at times last week, so finding their rhythm early on will be high-priority this Friday.

  • On defense, the Falcons will need to contain Chesapeake's speedsters, who have the ability to break loose if given a chance.

Chesapeake:

  • In order to limit Minford's offensive chances, the Panthers offense will need to control the clock and scratch some points on the board.

  • The Panther defense must not allow Jeff Pica to get any momentum when he gets the ball. So gang tackling and swarming to the ball will help.

Wellston Rockets @ Fairland Dragons

When: Friday, August 25, 8:00 PM

Where: Jim Mayo Memorial Stadium, Proctorville, OH

The Dragons are flying high after their thrilling last-second win a week ago. But there's little time to celebrate, with the underdog Rockets coming to town looking to go 2-0. The heat could play a factor for both teams on Friday.

Wellston:

  • The Rockets will need to play keep-away with the football and keep Fairland from getting their high-powered offense on the field.

  • Wellston's defense will need to keep the Dragons from attacking the edges and force Fairland into long down-and-distance situations.

Fairland:

  • The Dragons will have an advantage at the skill position. So expect the offense to exploit that early and often.

  • The defense will need to limit the Rockets success early in the game and prevent them from gaining any confidence or momentum.

Green Bobcats @ Grove City Christian Eagles

Time: Friday, August 25, 7:00 PM

Where: Fairfield Christian Stadium, Grove City, OH

Last season the Bobcats opened up their new stadium with a memorable overtime thriller again Fairfield Christian. Well this year, the Knights plan to return the favor with breaking in their new field with a win over Green.

Green:

  • The Bobcats will need to establish their offense early. Which means the run game will need to find its footing in the early going.

  • With the Eagles looking to spread the field, the Bobcats will need to close down run lanes and swarm to the ball.

Fairfield Christian:

  • The offense will be looking to spread out the Bobcats and let their skills players make plays in space.

  • The Eagles will need to limit the Bobcat offense from getting large chunks of yards in first down and controlling clock.

South Point Pointers @ Albany Alexander Spartans

Time: Friday, August 25, 7:00 PM

Where: Albany Alexander Spartans Stadium, Albany, OH

Both squads will be searching for win number one this Friday. Last season, the Pointers were able to make short work of the Spartans at home. This season, Alexander looks to return the favor inside the confines of their own stadium

South Point:

  • The Pointers will be needing to find their rhythm early. If the offensive line can establish control early, that could go a long way towards getting that rhythm.

  • Limiting the Spartans gains on early down and forcing third-and-long situations will help relax a defense needing to rebound from last week.

Albany Alexander:

  • The Spartans will be undersized upfront against the Pointers' defensive line. So using quickness and speed will combat that disadvantage.

  • On defense, the Spartans will need to keep the Pointers rushing attack at bay. This could mean loading the box with extra players on Friday.

Coal Grove Hornets @ Lucasville Valley Indians

Time: Saturday, August 26, 1:00 PM

Where: Valley Stadium, Lucasville, OH

These two teams went back-and-forth last season with a high scoring game. Both offenses could be prepped to do the same again. So it'll be a test of which defense can gain the early upper hand and stop the other.

Coal Grove:

  • The Hornets showed they have backs with big play capabilities, which means the it's going to come down to the offensive line opening up holes on Saturday.

  • With the Indians struggling at times last week, keeping them in long down-and-distance situations will be key to getting their offense off the field.

Lucasville Valley:

  • Gaining first downs and controlling the clock will be a must on Saturday as to limit the opportunities for Coal Grove's stable of backs to get going.

  • The Indians' defense will have to stop the run again this week, so expect extra defenders in the box.

Game of the Week: Jackson Ironmen @ Ironton Fighting Tigers

Time: Saturday, August 26, 8:00 PM

Where: Tanks Memorial Stadium, Ironton, OH

Both teams are riding high after week one wins. The past two seasons have been nail-biters and we could be treated to a third-straight one. The heatwave could play a factor and make this tough one both teams.

Jackson:

  • The run-heavy Ironmen will need to establish control of the line of scrimmage early. So expect to see plenty of power and unbalanced line looks.

  • Keeping this game low-scoring will be to Jackson's advantage. Which means positive yards and first downs will be highly treasured on Saturday.

  • Stopping the big play will be a must. So playing assignment football and swarming to the ball will be important.

Ironton:

  • Finishing drives and limiting negative plays will go along way in making this game either a win or loss on Saturday.

  • Jackson's power offense will be a new challenge for the defense. The front seven will be tasked at showing their physicality on Saturday.

  • Ironton must limit costly penalties and avoid turnovers in order to stop Jackson from keeping this game close.
