Keys to the Game: Week 5

Updated: Sep 19, 2022

Fairland Dragons (3-1) @ Rock Hill Redmen (2-2)

Time: Friday, September 16, 7:00 PM

Where: Redmen Stadium, Pedro, OH

The Dragons have controlled the series as of late winning the last 6 meetings and looking to make it 7 in a row. Rock Hill will be a heavy underdog at home this Friday, but did play Portsmouth tough on the road last week. The Dragons will be searching for their first league win of the season.

Fairland:

  • The Dragons will look to start fast and jump out to a big lead early. So expect quarterback Peyton Jackson to put the ball in the air early on.

  • Defensively, Fairland's interior will need to be more physical and keep the Redmen from gaining large chunks of yards and first downs.

Rock Hill:

  • The Redmen will need to be able to control the clock by sustaining long drives. Look for them to mix it up some to keep the Dragons defense at bay.

  • The defense will have to find ways to get the Fairland offense off the field. A mix of defensive looks and blitzes might be needed for Friday night.

Rock Hill Redmen end Chanz Pancake (15) makes an outstanding catch that helped set up a touchdown. Despite the play, the Redmen fell to the Portsmouth Trojans 35-21 last Friday. (Jeremy Holtzapfel/HoltzPhoto.com)

Green Bobcats (4-0) @ Fairview (KY) Eagles (1-3)

Time: Friday September 16, 7:30 PM

Where: Fairview Football Stadium, Westwood, KY

The Bobcats will travel across the Ohio River in search of a 5-0 start to their season before SOC play begins. The Bobcats easily defeated the Eagles last year 36-21, but anything can happen when your on the road and in across the river.

Green:

  • The offense will need to continue using their ground game to keep control of the clock and establish the flow of the game in their favor.

  • The Bobcats will need to halt the air attack by Fairview. Look for the defense to apply pressure on the Eagles quarterback, who has 7 interceptions on the year.

Fairview:

  • The Eagles will rely on the arm of quarterback Austin Miller to attack the Bobcats. Expect the senior to target wide receivers Jeremy Harper and Caden Thomas in the early going.

  • Defensively the Eagles have been able to force turnovers this season, averaging 2 per game. Continuing to force turnovers could help their cause Friday.

Coal Grove Hornets (4-0) @ Chesapeake Panthers (2-2)

When: Friday, September 16, 7:00 PM

Where: Panthers Stadium, Chesapeake, OH

The Hornets are looking to extend their win streak to five on Friday night as they are the heavy favorites. This game marks the second of a tough 4-game stretch for the Panthers, who will be looking to get to the more favorable games that are left on the schedule.

Coal Grove:

  • The Hornet offense should be able to run the ball Friday. So look for them to hone their craft and work on things to get ready for the games ahead on the schedule.

  • A strong defensive effort will be needed to prevent the Panther offense from utilizing their misdirection plays and chewing up clock.

Chesapeake:

  • The offense will be the best defense for the Panthers on Friday. They will need to gain 4 or more yards on first down to help with that gameplan.

  • The defense will need to bottle up Chase Hall from getting loose. Expect the Panthers to key on him and see if someone else steps up for the Hornets.

South Point Pointers (2-2) @ Ironton Fighting Tigers (4-0)

Time: Friday, September 16, 7:00 PM

Where: Tanks Memorial Stadium, Ironton, OH

After four big games in four weeks, the Tigers come to the lighter part of their schedule. Ironton will be a heavy favorite on Friday as they look to start preparing for the postseason. The Pointers will look to weather the storm this week as a big matchup with Rock Hill looms i the distance for next week.

South Point:

  • The Pointers offense will be in need of some big plays if quarterback Ermalovich is unavailable for this game.

  • The defense will be tasked at trying to stop a potent offensive attack. While they had success against Coal Grove last week, it will take a greater effort this week.

Ironton:

  • The Tigers need to continue finding their offensive identity and get their running game going.

  • A game such as this gives the Tigers a chance to work on two major things: Penalties and turnovers. Now is just as good as any time to work on improving those stats.

Game of the Week: Gallia Academy Blue Devils (4-0) @ Portsmouth Trojans (2-2)

Time: Friday, September 16, 7:00 PM

Where: Trojan Colosseum, Portsmouth, OH

The Blue Devils put their undefeated record on the line as they visit Portsmouth in a big matchup for both teams as they jockey to keep pace with Ironton for the league crown. This game will feature a lot of speed on both sides and possible high scoring this Friday.

Gallia Academy:

  • The offense will be facing a speedy Trojan defense. Luckily, the Blue Devils will be able to counter that with their own brand of speed.

  • The passing of quarterback Brody Fellure has been a big part of the Blue Devils success early on. Expect to see the senior air it out Friday.

  • The Blue Devils will have to keep the wide receiving corp of the Trojans in check and not allow them to get free in the secondary.

Portsmouth:

  • The Trojans will need spread the ball around to their playmakers much like they did last week.

  • Quarterback Tyler Duncan has been able to carve out rushing yards when needed for the struggling Trojan ground attack, expect him to continue that Friday.

  • After giving up 136 yards in the air last week to Rock Hill, the defense will need to tighten up their pass coverage this week as they face a true passing attack.

Game of the Week: Jackson Ironmen (2-2) @ Wheelersburg Pirates (3-1)

Time: Friday, September 16, 7:00 PM

Where: Ed Miller Stadium, Wheelersburg, OH

For both teams, this will be a big point game in terms of the playoffs. This should be a very physical game that features a lot of running backs touching the ball for both teams. The Pirates have the slight edge as the favorite as they have the home field advantage.

Jackson:

  • The Ironmen will face a tough defense, establishing their run game will be a big priority and hopefully soften up the Pirates.

  • In a game such as this, a duel threat quarterback can be a major impact player. Luckily senior Jacob Winters fits the mold for the Ironmen.

  • The defense will need to prevent the big play from a Pirate offense that burned up Ashland last week for 325 on the ground.

Wheelersburg:

  • The Pirates will need to get their offense going after a slow start last week. With speedster backs like Eric Lattimore and Creed Warren, that should help the cause.

  • In much of the same case as Jackson, quarterback Eli Jones will need to use his legs and also his arm to soften up the defense.

  • The Pirate defense will need to limit Jackson's gains on early downs and force them into obvious passing situations. Something Jackson would rather not do.
